Diguardia

The Principality of Diguardia is the most populous nation on Chaia, and controls the 7th most territory. It is also one of the most militarily formidable nations.   Diguardia was formed early in the Age of Heroes by the legendary Queen Annali, the same queen who slew Nelrointh to end the Age of Flames and the tyranny of the Dragon Kings.   Upon Annali's death her loyal servant ascended to power. Faced, however, with impossibly big shoes to fill, the councilor refrained from crowing himself king, electing instead adopt the title of Prince of Diguardia in recognition that he could never hope to replace the legendary Queen.

Structure

Diguardia is a feudal hierarchy. While the nobility has been around since the days of Queen Annali, the grip of feudalism has tighten considerably since the beginning of the Age of Smoke and the rise of magical monsters. In the present day, nearly the entire governance of the principality is feudal. At the top of this hierarchy is Prince Wilhelm, ruler of Diguardia. Beneath the prince are the dukes and duchesses of the realm. These dukes and duchesses rule over the various counts and countesses, who in turn oversee the barons. There are, of course, scribes and officials who are not nobility, but their authority is always derived from whichever noble they serve at the pleasure of. Nobles, by contrast, rule by birthright. While a duchess is above a count, and the count owes her respect, taxes, and men in the event of an armed conflict, the duchess could never revoke the counts rule, nor could she make anyone a count. Such actions would require the authority of the prince. Even still, the prince does not have the authority to meddle with the titles given by Queen Annali during the Age of Heroes, only those which have been given by another prince or princess.

Public Agenda

Diguardia seeks to protect the Anor people, follow the legacy of Queen Annali, and promote trade and good relations with its neighbors.

Technological Level

Diguardia is, like most of Chaia, medieval in its technological level. One must note, as for all nations of Chaia, that the existence of magic does lend itself to the illusion of increased technological level in some ways and in some places. But removed from any magic, Diguardia would find itself much at home near the turn of the first millennium AD.
