State Alchemists

Alchemists that have passed their State Certification are granted research funds and a rank within the Amestrian Military equivalent to a Major. While some Alchemists serve primarily as soldiers and can be promoted as such, most are researchers.   All alchemists make use of sigils contained within a circle and are used to transmute matter from one state into another or to change its shape. As a rule, they must follow the law of equivalent exchange. Once established, alchemists generally stick to a specialized form of alchemy, such as flame or explosion, and are granted a moniker based upon this. The ultimate taboo for any alchemist is Human Transmutation, or using a human as the base/catalyst for transmutation. This includes bringing someone back to life.   The ultimate goal of most State Alchemists is to create or obtain a philosopher's stone which would permit them to ignore the laws of equivalent exchange.   During the Ishvalan Civil War, Amestris dispatched their alchemists as living weapons to supress the insurrection. Many were opposed to this and either abandoned post or made the decision to oppose the Fuhrer directly.

Structure

State Alchemists function as a branch of the Amestrian Military. Any alchemist that has passed the exam holds a rank on par with a Major, unless otherwise promoted through military command.

We are all beholden to the law of equivalent exchange.
