The
Battle of Mexico City was a major conflict that took place in
Mexico City,
Mexico , where the
Mexican Armed Forces did battle with the kaiju
Xochimilkhan . It took place from June 11, 2020, to June 13th and marked the ninth major occurrence of the Invasive Species Skirmishes.
The Conflict
Prelude
Majestic had been studying the kaiju known as Xochimilkhan, which had buried itself into the bottom of the Tijuana River back during the precolonial period of Mesoamerican history. A base was constructed in California at the mouth of the river to observe it in hibernation. At the beginning of June in 2020, the kaiju had awakened and broke out of the facility, escaping into the Pacific Ocean. The exact cause is completely unknown, and investigations were ultimately inconclusive.
The United States and Mexican navies attempted to find the creature out in the open ocean, but it evaded detection entirely until it resurfaced at the mouth of the Balsas River. It followed the river inland on a specific path, crossing through forest and flatland to avoid human contact. Towns in its vicinity were evacuated, and the military adopted a wait-and-see approach as they followed it.
Military forces had been rerouted to the borders of Mexico City in order to repel the kaiju from entering. With all of their forces in one area, they believed it would be a strong resistance. Despite the immense firepower, the kaiju was not deterred and actually seemed to be enraged by the attacks. It cut a destructive swathe through anything in its way until it reached the
Xochimilco Ecological Park and Plant Market where it began to settle within
Lake Xochimilco.
Nearby structures were being destroyed in order to clean up and protect its new territory. Military forces attempted to drive the kaiju out with bombing runs or artillery strikes, but its retaliation was just as destructive. Further military actions was difficult, as they wished to avoid endangering the nearby civilian populace or provoke the neighboring kaiju
Qetz .
A twenty-mile exclusion zone was made around the Xochimilco Ecological Park, and many civilians were evacuated. Mexico City suffered many losses, and the government was widely criticized for allowing the kaiju to wander so far inland. The city underwent another mass exodus, much larger than the one before. Many migrants attempted to flee for the United States border, but it had become significantly more enforced since the previous influx.
