The Knights' Stronghold
The Knights' Stronghold is a group operating out of the southern deserts. The Knights of the Stronghold are elite warriors trained from early childhood in the art of combat. The Stronghold doesn't belong to any one nation, and so the Knights can come from anywhere and travel anywhere free of scrutiny. The Knights' Stronghold protects peace across Continental by defeating dangerous things that peasantry could not defend against. The Stronghold and it's orders were founded in 0 ME, thus ending the dark years and starting the modern era(ME). The Knights' Stronghold was founded by 1 wandering warrior and their 3 squires.
The Stronghold is alerted of threats by the extensive mail system they run which brings Knight reports, pleas for aid, and any other letter to The Stronghold (or any other country!) where they are sorted and read. The mail system does have small fees that any non-Knight will have to pay. Also due to slow travel speeds pleas might not arrive at the Stronghold in time.
After a successful job a Knight is paid in coin and the trophy of whatever they slew. If they do a particularly grand thing, such as take down an especially dangerous beast; then they may receive additional rewards such as sigils of various sizes or an epithet. This only happens rarely, though, so even a small sigil catapults a Knight into a higher status.
The Stronghold also has the best blacksmiths and armorers (called Artisan Knights) in Continental, who's fine weapons and armor are sold to the Knights and the richest of countries. These are the main export good of the Stronghold, with monster slaying being the main service.
There are three main branches of Knights in the Stronghold, they are The Wanderer Knights, the Assassin knight, and the Artisan Knight.
Every person who lives within the Stronghold is a Knight, and all Knight's permanent addresses are the Stronghold for the purposes of mail.
Structure
The Taskmaster is the ultimate authority, with the Knight Recruiters just underneath. Sigiled Knights are above regular Knights in level but not authority.
Culture
The Knights have an obsession with being perceived as strong; it impacts every Knight in one way or another. In the Stronghold 'strength' is defined as the ability to create change in your environment, hence how there are non-combat Knights still considered strong.
Territories
The area around the Stronghold is about 10 miles in diameter.
Education
Each knight is taught to read and write by the same person who trains them in combat. But this education is only comparable to an elementary school education.
