Personal history

Maralen was born early in the history of the Feywild, the first child of Queen Oona Shadowsilk. She was raised within the opulent Shadow Glen, in a society where fairies lived at the top of a strict hierarchy. Maralen's mother spent very little time with her daughter, leaving the princess in the care of slaves and servants. Periodically, Maralen would be called to make an appearance in the Court of the Shadow Glen; due to her mother usually being so distant, Maralen would get overly excited at these chances to be near her mother. Oona would inevitably grow embarrassed at her daughter's overeager demeanor in public and chastise her child for her misbehavior. Years of this dynamic led to a cold relationship between the Fae Queen and her child who was only seeking affection and love.   By contrast, Maralen had a very close relationship with her slaves and servants, owing to interacting daily and personally with the "lesser races." As the years went by, Maralen developed close ties to the many Eladrin, satyr, and other fae species that tended to her needs; she saw them as a source of affection that was lacking from her mother. She lived outside of the constant propaganda that bombarded the rest of fairy society and as such began to take pity on the enslaved Eladrin.   One elf in particular, a handsome male named Corellon, recognized the princess's desperate need for affection and saw it as the key to freeing the enslaved Eladrin. He seduced Maralen, gaining her trust, making her see him as a friend and encouraging her to confide in him. It was through this relationship that the Eladrin learned of the existence of Turvandil, a relic originally forged by the Eladrin and stolen by the Fae Queen when she took control of the Feywild. Maralen and Corellon continued to grow closer, the two eventually becoming lovers and declaring their undying love for one another. Corellon explained to the naive archfey that the two of them could only truly be together in a world where Eladrin and fairies were equals. The elf convinced Maralen to steal her mother's scepter so that Corellon could open a portal to the Prime Material Plane.   Maralen snuck into her mother's quarters and stole the scepter from the Fae Queen, bringing the ancient relic back to her lover. Corellon said he needed to alert the Eladrin to the coming exodus and instructed Maralen to meet him on the other side of the portal. Maralen did as she was told, gathering her things and preparing to flee with the other fae creatures; she knew her mother would not approve of her actions and wanted to escape the Fae Queen's wrath. Crossing the open portal, Maralen found she was the only fairy among a crowd of creatures escaping the persecution of her race. She sought out Corellon, thinking her lover could convince the rest of the escapees that she was on their side. Unfortunately, by the time she found the elven hero, he had shattered Turvandil and succumb to the poison of the scepter. The elves blamed the archfey for the death of their champion, insisting that she had sabotaged the scepter in some way. Maralen fled, isolated from her people and a pariah among the races she had sought to save from enslavement.   Maralen spent years in seclusion. From the shadows, she witnessed the ascension of Corellon, the Titanomachy, the birth of the Drow, the rise of Lolth and the horrors of the Drow War. The fae princess was forced to live outside of society, watching as the races she had hoped to save made mistake after mistake and wasted the gift of freedom she had given them. She grew colder and more bitter with each passing century, seeing the elves form the same societal hierarchy that Corellon had convinced her was unjust. In time, the fae princess saw her actions as a mistake and made it her mission to recover the shattered remnants of Turvandil to re-open the Feywild Portal and bring back the order her mother had previously established.
