The First Six

Xaemon paced the cave, her claws tapping rhythmically against the stone. She growled a bit as she kicked one of Fharu’s coins across the way. Fharu was possessive of her hoard, but never cared to clean up after herself. Zerith poked his head in from the tunnel, looking a bit apprehensive.   “What are you doing?” he ventured.   “Something important,” Xaemon snapped.   He sighed and walked over to her, flicking his tail neatly over his claws as he sat. “Let me guess: immortality, right?”   She started to walk circles around him. “We’re supposed to be greedy dragons. What else could I mean?”   “Fharu’s probably the only one who’s greedy,” he pointed out. “We just smashed in a few villages, that’s all.”   “A few?” She stopped her pacing to slap his side with her tail. “My count is five hundred and six, thank you very much. Besides, what does that have to do with greed?”   He looked off to the side, sitting down and counting on his claws. “Well, there’s wanting to smash them in to eat more than we need, burning them for the fun of it, and overall just killing a lot of things. Oh, and we all have looted them. Fharu might have a hoard, but we each have our own trinkets.” He held his claws to his own ear piercing, a rare and brilliant orange-yellow topaz on a ring of gold.   “Back to the point. I’m doing important things, so you should go.” She nudged him with her wing, but he didn’t budge an inch.   “Like what?” he stared at her with those innocent eyes he always put on when he wanted something. “Do tell me.”   She groaned, and went over to her bed to sit down. “Fine. You can stay on my cold floor, though,” she added as he made a move to join her.   He tuned up his snout. “Not that I like your bed, anyways. Fur? Ugh. I like my feathers better.”   “Not my problem that you’re strange.” She smiled just a bit. “Anyhow, I think you already know. It’s about immortality. Like you said.”   “Not that there’s any proof we’re not immortal. We’ve lived this long, right?” he turned Fharu’s coin over and over in his talons, sending the reflection dancing over their scales.   “Yes, but since we’re the first dragons, we’d also be the first to die naturally. Our children would be the lucky ones,” she said.   “I’d think we’re lucky, since we’re the first. We’re powerful enough to make other dragons from magic,” he said.   “That cost so, so, much.” She looked him dead in the eyes. “It’s taken us a thousand years to recuperate.”   “So,” he said, putting the coin down and sweeping it to the side with his tail, “what is your plan?”   “Humans.” She heaved herself from her bed, going behind him to her collection of artifacts. “They’re smarter than we give them credit for, as much as I loathe to admit it.” She took a human skull in her hands, and almost crushed it between her talons.   He came up next to her, taking the skull out of her talons to examine it for himself.   “It’s a long shot, but I think we could make suitable vessels out of them, and live in them,” she said.   He stared at her, handing her back the skull. “You’re crazy. It’s official.”   She bared her teeth, hissing just a bit. “I’ve been thinking, pondering, and waiting for a while. I think I know what to do.”

Structure

Xaemon, being the firstborn (and one of the more bossy members), takes the official position of leader. She functions as the face of the group in negotiations, although the other five are perfectly happy to do their own business. However, in terms of real hierarchy, there is none--besides the hierarchy that works out naturally at any given moment, depending on who feels they should be more respected. They are all fundamentally equals.   Birth order: Xaemon, Zerith, Fharu, Mirial, Nala, and Miki.

History

The First Six are the first six dragons, hatched together. If they have parents or creators is unknown. However, the First Six gave rise to the rest of the dragons--using their own magic to create new beings after themselves. As such, they are revered somewhat in the dragon community. Later, they also created the first draglins, and were similarly the only dragons able to successfully reside in draglin bodies, effectively making them immortal.
