Session 38: Religious Grievances

General Summary

Monster Ambush

  • A monstrous creature burst from the water, rooting most of the party in place with its terrifying roar. This was followed up by a devastating breath attack that knocked back several party members and almost knocking them unconscious immediately.
  • A supernatural storm quickly brewed as the fight begun, as lightning flashed and thunder boomed. The creature seemed unaffected; on the contrary, it seemed to feed off of the elements.
  • However, the power of numbers quickly made itself apparent, and the creature was becoming overwhelmed. It possessed a regenerative factor that was healing through most of what the party was throwing at it, including a devastating strike from Viribus. In fact, the strike greatly angered the monster, who threw caution to the wind and went after Viribus in a frenzy.
  • The defenses of the creature gave it just enough time to nearly tear Maleakos' leg clean off before retreating into the water as the storm quickly subsided.
  • Maleakos, who had been thrown 20 feet away, could hardly walk. Ashpin and Philip patched it up as best they could, but he was still unable to walk without the help of a long drag of the blue lily.
  • Lumen quickly took the lead, and the journey through the plains continued.

"Hey, We Died"

  • Ashpin, who was much more talkative now for some reason, wanted to discuss the fact that they had finally escaped from the temple where they had actually just died and returned to life.
  • N'nchyk, excited to talk about death, asked Philip and Ashpin how they reconciled their death with their belief in the Silver Flame. The two men agreed that Dolurrh was compatible with any religion, as it was not the final destination, but the gateway to what laid beyond.
  • Philip said he liked to believe that each person made beyond Dolurrh whatever they wished it to be: he and Ashpin would join the Voice in the Flame, while one who believed in the Sovereign Host. N'nchyk, in classic style, managed to contradict the concept of eternal happiness, saying that he didn't like the idea of being conscious forever.
  • There was a brief debate about N'nchyk's dedication to the daelkyr.
  • N'nchyk also mentioned how their fate kept being mentioned. In Dolurrh, he remembered that Surren told them that the reason why they were more tangible than the other incorporeal spirits wandering the catacombs was because of one's relevance to the Draconic Prophecy. This, however, was only Surren's theory. Lumen piped up, saying that the reason Torfe had sent him to check on the Crew was because he got word from Theobald that there had been a disturbance in the Prophecy.
  • Dooturr wondered out loud about his own deathless state. He asked what everyone thought would happen to him after he died, and it was thought that Dooturr still had a soul to enter Dolurrh. In fact, Dooturr said he had been visited by the soul of the the brother, Adam, of the body Dooturr was inhabiting. Before The Mourning, according to Adam, Dooturr was a man named John.
  • Dooturr said John had been a nationally-renowned thief unlike any that Cyre had seen before. His exploits were so legendary that the Cyran government eventually contracted him to help out in Last War efforts.

If I Had A Nickel For Every Time a Cat Popped Up During This Section

  • There was a few hours of bliss and peace before N'nchyk tweaked out. His arms began to break and splinter, causing him a great amount of pain, as they contorted and stretched outwards with disgusting crunching noises. At the end of the process, his arms were elongated beyond typical proportions, and he promptly turned into an eldritch cat.
    • Lumen was understandably shocked, and used Speak with Animals to communicate with N'nchyk's new form.
    • N'nchyk said these changes were normal, but not exactly expected. N'nchyk said they were because of his friend; the one who has saved his life and helped his studies. He follows whatever path she sets for him
  • At some point along the path, Bellum caught sight of a small black shape dart into a bush up ahead. After investigating, he discovered the form of a small black cat, and carried it by its scruff back to the party. The cat immediately darted to Dooturr, as it seemed to be infatuated with the clacking of his bones. After Ashpin and Lumen inspected the creature, Lumen noticed it had a name tag that read "Njord", which he knew was a Celestial word connoting strength and vigorousness.
  • As Dooturr assumed his sentry position to keep watch for the night, Njord squeezed out of his rib hammock and approached Viribus, who was settling in for rest on the ground. Njord snuggled up to his shoulder, and Viribus seemed to be listening to something before streaks of golden energy began to thread through his red shield. N'nchyk dropped his notebook and mushroom at the sight, and Viribus disappeared and reappeared in the perfect place to catch them.
  • As the day drew to a close, Philip and Ashpin once again tended to the wounded leg of Maleakos. It was improving, but the healing energy could only speed up the process so much.
  • A guest visited in the dark of the night.
