Session 38: Deadly Ground, Part 2

General Summary

(This is the second of two sessions covering The Battle of the Crag)

In order to pass into the room for the final battle logistics dictated Ripper leave one of his undead Warforged behind (due to the use of the Crag Ring). The party enters the room to find a small contingent of House Deneith soldiers led by Breven d'Deneith himself. The soldiers- and Breven- look haggard, and the corpses littering the room show why. Dominating the room is a blue barrier, and inside the barrier a tear creating a portal to what is, apparently, the Demon Wastes. The barrier and portal are being unwillingly powered by Mary Tallman, who is suspended in the air inside the barrier. Tendrils of magical power run from her cut Symbol to both the barrier and portal. Mary is still alive, though in massive amount of pain. Tears of blood are falling to the stone below her as the portal pulses ominously.

Brevan tells the party the monsters flow out of the portal in waves, and the barrier prevents his men from moving closer. The party move to support the existing troops. Celosia Senho takes her position behind the soldiers, with Tarryn Rowntree guarding her.

The battle is long and brutal. These fiends move with much more capability and intelligence than before, guided by a larger and more dangerous devil with the ability to paralyze his victims. The battle is brutal, leaving many of the party almost dying but for last minute healing. Tarryn, in particular, is moments from death on multiple occasions, but it is Hult who dies in the fighting. Almost all of the House Deneith soldiers perish as well.

The aftermath of the attack sees almost 200 dead among the combined forces of Droaam and the Dragonmarked Houses, many of those civilians. The party learns the attack was perpetrated by Benne Rowich, who hid on the airships while the party was hunting for those with the Symbol (See Session 35: Surrounded Ground and Session 36: Snatch and Grab). She then, along with her other followers, killed the guards watching the prisoners, and used the prisoners to power the portals and barriers. The party meets with both House heads and the The Daughters of Sora Kell, and find they are left to shoulder a somewhat unfair portion of the blame, though this blame also prevents all out war (for more notes on this see the Slack channel #pc_planning from 11/18/21).

The party is ordered to take an airship and pursue Benne Rowich. The Daughters order the exile of the party until the mission is complete, though they (and the Dragonmark leaders) ensure the party is well equipped for their journey.

Following this revelation Tarryn explains to the party that he cannot go on. The trauma of the last fight has overwhelmed him, and he needs to go home. Simon Twoorb, similarly, explains he must also leave the party to their expedition. He is now working to maintain peace between the two sides.

Rewards Granted

The party reaches level 10.

Notes

Simon Twoorb and Tarryn Rowntree leave the party.
