Delizia Maro Monastery

Sitting at the base of the Crystal Summit, the Delizia Maro Monastery is the religious and political heart of Messino. Once a simple monastery dedicated to The Thirteen, it is now a far-reaching organization with its own military and influence over the politics of Rivia.

Purpose / Function

On paper, the monastery is dedicated to the worship of The Thirteen, the official deities recognized by the Messino government. There are thirteen orders housed within the monastery, and each have their own dedicated temples for worship. Housed within the monastery as well are clerical academies, especially for the larger religions such as those dedicated to Oghma and Tyr, and the academy dedicated to Tempus produces the monastery's military forces.

Denizens

The Delizia Maro Monastery has a population that could be considered closer to a large city than a quiet monastery, hosting priests, students, and soldiers numbering in the tens of thousands. Most temples employ hundreds of lower priests, not counting students and higher ranking priests. Students study at academies dedicated to the deities of their orders, and the number of students vary year to year, though the larger orders, such as the Order of Tempus, rarely have fewer than 300-500 students even in years when enrollment is low. In addition to priests and students, the monastery houses a veritable army of around 1,500 soldiers, and a cavalry of around 500.

Valuables

It is believed that the monastery is in possession of most, if not all, of the holy relics left by The Thirteen, and possibly artifacts belonging to the deities that aren't officially recognized. The existence of many of the artifacts are almost purely speculation, but it is believed that the Archbishop's crown belonged to Selune. Whether that is true is widely debated.

Special Properties

Along with military forces, the monastery is also protected by magic of every kind. There are wards and magical barriers that can be conjured within seconds, massive statues that can easily be animated and manipulated, and thousands of priests that wield powerful magic. A Detect Magic spell would be nearly overwhelmed by the amount of magic that flows through every inch of the monastery.

Alterations

The oldest building in the complex is the Temple of Oghma, and despite the size of its order, is also the smallest temple in on monastery grounds. As The Thirteen slowly became recognized religions of Messino, one by one, construction began on each temple dedicated to the deity. The Temple of Oghma was finished in 1E, 438, but the construction of the monastery as a whole wasn't completed until 4E, 339. The final addition was the Temple of Tempus.
