Arcane Watch

The Arcane Watch are a subset of the Averi Guard, distinct from the other divisions due to their emphasis on the application of magic while in the line of duty. Many of its members are non-humans, with species naturally inclined towards arcane practices being far more common amongst its ranks than typical for the rest of Averums police force. The Watch is responsible for the majority of law enforcement regarding the legality of magic items.

Culture

The Arcane Watch place an emphasis on recruiting people naturally adept in the use of magic, a practice which leads to an over-representation of certain species of humanoid - chiefly elves, gnomes and tieflings along with a considerable number of tritons (in comparison to the rest of Averum).   A longstanding rivalry between the Arcane Watch and the Guard Investigative Division has lead to somewhat tenuous relations between members of the two divisions. The Arcane Watch hold a belief that magical prowess can assist in the prevention of solving of crime, while the Investigative Division dismisses this claim entirely.

History

The Arcane Watch was established in 1009 as a retaliatory action against the chaos wrought during the Mindlickers Fray. In early 1011, much of the group behind the act, the Tahldrils were forced into hiding or killed outright. A law passed by the Pouchlords of Averum caused magic items to be banned entirely, along with the disbandment of the Arcane Watch and its absorption by the Averi Guard.   After lobbying from numerous prominent guilds of Averum, magic items were legalized in 1012 and the Arcane Watch was re-established, in addition to being made the primary judicial body overseeing the enforcement of their legality.
