Shen Lung

Shen lung, also known as spirit dragons, are dragons that are found in the rivers and lakes of Lungao.

Description

Shen lungs are physically distinguished by their enormous size, up to 151 feet in length. They resemble pan lung in appearance but are shorter and thicker. As hatchlings they have dull scales that are either blue, green, orange, or red, and are sometimes polychromatic. As they age, a shen lung's scales brighten. A shen lung has ridges along its back, a spiked tail, and two horns atop its head. Their gold-colored whiskers feature prominently on their snout.

Personality

Unlike most dragons, shen lung are modest. They maintain cordial relationships with nature spirits. Most shen lung will take human form to observe human life in villages, as they are fascinated by humans. Humans in Lungao regard shen lung as messengers from the gods and a source of good luck, often constructing shrines and temples, and holding ceremonies to gain favor of a local shen lung.

Combat

A shen lung will avoid combat if possible, seeking negotiations over open combat. If these negotiations fail, they unleash savage melee attacks with their teeth, claws, and spiked tail. Hey use several spells to attack, such as Ice Storm, scaly command, and water fire.

Abilities

Shen lung have a natural immunity to lightning and poison but are vulnerable to fire. THey also have a unique barrier ability which prevents any regular or giant insect, arachnid, or arthropod from approaching within 60 feet of them.   They have innate magical abilities, each gained as they grow older. Three times per day a mature shen lung can use Cone of Cold, Control Weather, Ice Storm, or Scaly Command. Once per day a mature shen lung can use Bane, Bless, and Horrid Wilting.

Ecology

While precious gems are the main component of their diet, a shen lung will also eat fish and small mammals. A shen lung lair is found at the bottom of the river or lae they are assigned by the Celestial Bureaucracy. A shen lung lacks wings but is able to fly because of a magical yellow pearl embedded in their brains. This pearl is similar to that on a t'ien lung. If found on a dead shen lung or removed from a live one, this pearl is worth 1,000 gp, yet does not retain its magical abilities. They can breath both air and water. Shen lung can communicate with animals in a way similar to the spell Speak with Animals.

Celestial Bureaucracy

Within the Celestial Bureaucracy, shen lung are assigned to act as guards and assistants to chiang lung and take this duty very seriously.
