Qarth

Qarth is one of two old cities, with a strong rivalry with Old Town lasting through the years. This rivalry stems from feelings of betrayal over the Hightower family choosing to settle in Old Town after their initial decision to settle in Qarth.
After a violent coup that killed some of the nobility of Qarth and caused the imprisonment of others, Aerin Elliot was killed after transforming into an abomination. His death caused an anomaly of black energy that seemed to transport anyone in it to what was possibly a shadow realm of some kind. This hole permanently sucked the mansion and tower into it, leaving a bottomless whole where it was.

Demographics

Mostly humans and elves with slightly lesser populations of dwarves and gnomes. There are smaller groups of half-orcs and dragonborn.

Government

Prior to the coup, there is a council of sorts, with a mayor, magistrate, archmage and adept sorcerer. They do not have any representative of the crown, however, so the local representative Beth must visit when needed.

Defences

A very old town, Qarth is highly defensible. It is surrounded by 100 ft walls with slopes at the bottom to prevent battering rams, as well as murder holes for dropping pitch or hot oils. There are ballista at strategic parts of the walls. Even the ports are protected with a large chain which can be used to prevent access from ships.

Industry & Trade

Much of the trade and income for Qarth comes from the sea ports.

Districts

Qarth is made up of multiple districts that help to separate the different peoples of Qarth.
The First District is the upper echelon of society in Qarth. Entrance is typically guarded and unless someone lives or works or has the right standing, entrance into the First District is typically not allowed.
The Second District is more commonly the middle and working class. Many higher end businesses are in the Second District, with less living arrangements than in the Third District. Many business owners live in the same building they work, or directly above their business.
The Third District mostly contains the docks, as well as some warehouses and taverns for sailors and dockhands.
The Fourth District is where the majority of folks live, especially families of sailors and dockhands. 
The Flea Bottom is the slums, the lowest of the low. Rowhouses line the streets for miles.
