Adelia Camburn
Lady Adelia Camburn
Adelia Camburn was born to an impoverished family working on the docks of Liberty. Her father was typically unemployed due to the moribund industry in the city, and he drank himself to death with the little money he was able to earn. Her mother worked as a prostitute on the same docks, another contributing factor to her father's drinking. Adelia herself had a quiet childhood, keeping away from the street gangs, and hoping for something better, but this was not to be, as she was soon forced into her mother's trade after her father's death. With few friends and no hope of escaping the city, she saw little other choice.
In was during this time that eventually she became the de facto property of House Camburn, a growing force in the criminal underworld of Liberty and the Jakonian Empire. Adelia inherited her mother's debts when she died, and found herself forced to pay them off while living under the Camburn thumb. It was no surprise, therefore that she despised Horace Camburn when she first met him as a client. Adelia at one point even tried to murder him, which spurred conversation, and eventually, an actual romance bloomed of sorts. The two of them spent every moment together and he even paid off any debt she had and offered to help her find a new life anywhere else. Charmed by this ploy, Adelia chose to stay with Horace, and the two were married as soon as his father died and he assumed the leadership of the house.
The charm quickly wore off, as Horace took every opportunity to exploit Adelia and to intimidate her with his position and violence. Although he was a vicious defender of her honor against any outsider, he rarely showed such chivalry in private, and beatings were fairly common if she so much as asked to pass the salt at the dinner table. The beatings and past profession made it extraordinarily unlikely that Adelia would ever have a child and that's why she and others were very much surprised when she gave birth to a son in 983. Adelia was nervous at how Horace would treat the child, but he instead doted upon their son, Arthur.
Arthur proved a mellowing presence upon Horace, and Adelia began to relax more easily, and their relationship improved dramatically as the beatings seemed to be at a permanent end. Unfortunately, past assaults and the difficulty of the pregnancy took their toll on Adelia. She suffered from ill health for nearly a decade and her mind seemed to be failing her at every turn. She became more defensive towards Horace and even verbally abusive towards Arthur. As the condition worsened, Horace's patience drew thin once more and he began beating her again. One night the blows landed a bit too strongly, and Adelia failed to wake up the following morning.
