Horace Camburn
Lord Horace Camburn
Horace Camburn was a brutal crime lord with only a slight masquerade of aristocratic legitimacy. He was one of several children and allowed to run wild through the streets of Liberty as a youth. He quickly fell in with criminal street gangs, most of which were manipulated and controlled by his father. Despite some injuries, which were usually cleared up quickly by corrupt clerics of the Church of the One Sun, Horace never lost his joy for brutally beating a rival in a street fight or smashing windows of recalcitrant shop owners. He neglected all other forms of responsibility, until forced by his father when he entered adulthood.
Unlike most families, which would likely attempt to beat or force the criminality out of their scion, House Camburn instead chose to encourage this behavior. He was given lessons by skilled assassins and thugs, who taught him the best way to smack down those who would oppose Horace. It should have been no surprise when the other heirs of the house began to fail to attend lessons and mysteriously disappeared. If anything, Horace's father was proud of his accomplishments and was never more proud than the day that he mysteriously choked on a chicken bone and died, leaving the position of Lord of the House to Horace.
Horace caused a great scandal in the courts of Jakonia by marrying a woman believed to have been a prostitute in Liberty for some time. These rumors and dissent were soon ended when one of her most prominent critics ended up beaten to death in an apparent robbery gone wrong. The husband of the dead woman challenged Horace to a duel, suspecting foul play, and as the challenged party, Horace chose combat by hands only. Without weapons, he simply beat the outraged man to death with his fists, thus concluding the matter.
This brutality extended into the political sphere, as Horace became very closely involved with the response to the Mims Uprising, deploying his levies to crush the rebellion that blighted both his territory and the territory of House Hayles. He showed no mercy to any captured rebels and raised several small hamlets while devastating the countryside against further outbreaks of rebellion. Despite his heavy-handedness in the response to the uprising, he was praised as a hero of the Empire, protecting the nation's territorial integrity. His survival of multiple assassination attempts seemed to only cement his position.
As he grew older, he became more focused on the criminal elements of House Camburn, expanding business ties and crushing remaining independent syndicates in Liberty and Nasah. Horace fell in love with his only son, and spared no expense upon making sure that he would be a worthy successor in time. He provided hands on tutoring and brought in some of the best in the business to give his son everything he could to become an even more feared master of business and politics. Unfortunately, during a bout of training, Horace's heart began to fail, and after a string of heart attacks, he passed away.
