Gerroth Herrod

Chief Editor Gerroth Herrod

Gerroth Herrod was born in the Imperial City, the son of a family of half-elf artisans, prominent tinkerers and gearwrights. Having been specialists in helping maintain much of the complex machinery at the Imperial Palace and among the fortifications surrounding the Fruitlands, they had a decent amount of wealth, in order to provide their son with a high quality education. Some of the best tutors in the city were brought in to help Gerroth learn the ways of the world, and he demonstrated a natural aptitude for creative writing and publishing. His parents bought his way into the Imperial University to learn from some of the best writers around and he soon found a fascination for adventurers and the world beyond the borders of the Empire.   Gerroth's curiosity and zest for adventure brought him to the heart of the Sypi Civil War, deep in the Confederacy. He insinuated himself with the Sihka armies and became a journalist covering the war and sending home news reports which were sold to newspapers within the Imperial City. His works became famous, detailing the war and the barbaric attacks and style of conflict among the tribes. His own exploits during the heat of battle further enraptured the reading population of the peninsula, detailing his narrow escapes from attacks. Eventually, however, his luck ran out.    During one of the late battles of the war, as the Sihka were running out of strongholds, the detachment that Gerroth was traveling with was attacked by elements of the Bienombe Tribe, and were cut off and outnumbered. Gerroth himself took up a blade in the battle, to very limited use, and he was cut down in the first moments of the fight, left for dead and ravaged by the attacker's weapons. He was left paralyzed and forced to crawl for miles all the way to the border with Losana, relying on the knowledge he had learned from the tribal Sihka of the appropriate berries and leaves that could be eaten to sustain him. It was sheer luck that he was not slaughtered by wild animals or enemy patrols.    It took him weeks of this pained travel, unable to use all of his limbs but his right arm, still carrying his notes and gear along with him. He eventually was discovered by a Losanan patrol operating out of Castle Foret Sikh, and brought in. The healers present at the castle were forced to amputate his left arm and legs, although they did offer him prosthetics to aid in his journey and efforts to reintegrate into society. It took him nearly two years of recovery to return to the Imperial City, at which point the fickle population had forgotten him and his parents had passed away, believing him killed in the war. With what money he had left from inheritance, he fell into drink and squandered much of it away. It took a rediscovery of his love of writing to bring him back from the brink and he began doing editing work for some of the local broadsheets.   Luck played a key role in preserving his life, as the Lord Mayor of Capcora was a fan of Gerroth's earlier works as a child, devouring the vast catalog of his writings that he had sent home to the peninsula. Therefore, in 1040, he was approached to become involved as chief editor for a new newspaper, this one published in the far away New World. Seeing a chance to make a new name for himself and be on the periphery of adventure once more, despite his injuries, Gerroth gladly accepted the position and made the journey over the Endless Ocean.
