Peter Collias
Mayor Peter Collias
Peter Collias is today the mayor of the city of Potamipoli. He was born to the old mayor, as the third son. Not expecting to receive much of an inheritance, Collias embraced the life of adventure. He joined the Alsonan Rangers, but ultimately was very independently minded, seeking out private adventuring parties and the opportunities they presented. His adventures became the thing of legends among the Rangers, as he adventured far to the north, west, and east. Stories about these times abound, claiming that he had spent a year as a slave to giants before escaping in the west, while others say that he lived as a guest among the Great Khan of the centaur just as long. Collias has always been incredibly tight-lipped about his old adventures, claiming that they occasionally stir up unpleasant memories.
After spending decades adventuring, Collias retired to write a series of memoirs at the behest of the Rangers Academy. He provided detailed guides and logs to dealing with various types of monsters and creatures that could be found. His specialty books provided instructions to combating worst of the creatures of the Deadlands, the Apps, and the Giant Lands. These were well received among the Rangers, but were shunned by professional academics and scholars for being hearsay and not much better than a retelling of myth. It was expected that Collias would spend out the rest of his days writing these books, but fate had another idea.
During his adventures and time abroad, Peter's father passed away and his older brother was nominally elected to become the Mayor of Potamipoli. He ruled fairly for a time, but passed away early. Peter's next oldest brother was elected, but it was quickly revealed that he was a cheat and corrupt beyond all reasonable measure. The Vovoi were welcomed into the city and the worst sort of elements began to dominate over others. The corruption of the city government was made absolute, and the common people and even the middle classes began to suffer. Appeals to the Crown for aid were ignored. In an act of desperation, a coalition of neighborhood leaders paid to have a message delivered to Peter Collias, who had been kept out of the loop by his brother. When he heard of the situation, Peter gathered some of his adventurer friends and they soon intervened. After only a few weeks, the corruption of his brother was exposed, and he was forced into exile, fleeing ahead of an angry mob. The mob was quick to elect Collias as the new mayor.
Collias as mayor proved to be highly effective for several years, prior to the outbreak of the Wingo War. The Wingo War placed growing demands for conscripts and resources to fuel the Crown's war effort in the west. Collias was unwilling to provide much support, having adventured with dwarves and elves alike in the past. His reluctance was viewed as borderline treason both by the Crown and by the people. Support dried up for Collias during and after the war, and today he struggles to maintain the balance of power, particularly as he grows old and weak. Pretenders abound, and rumors claim that his deposed brother could well be waiting in the wings for a return to power.
