Plinio Vazzana
Plinio Vazzana was born to a family of merchants in the city of Marianna. As a child, his mother was killed by a thief while running an errand. Her death caused the family business, once thriving, to begin to decline. When Plinio became an adult, it became clear that without additional finances, the family would be destitute within a year. He therefore volunteered to join the Department of the Army. As a new recruit he received ample training in the halberd and he failed to distinguish himself beyond a basic competence. He was very likable to the rest of the ranks, and was able to secure a position as sergeant when he completed training in 1020 AF.
The following year, Plinio had a chance to show himself as something more, as the Sypi Civil War broke out, and the Department was looking for volunteers to aid the Church of the One Sun and the Sihka Tribe in defeating the Bienombes and their High Chief. Higher pay was offered, and the chance for advancement. Most career officers were disinterested in such a mission, believing it to be suicide, politically and literally. As the family was still in dire financial straits, Plinio agreed to join the Forard Expeditionary Force to the Sypi Confederacy. He was immediately given a promotion to lieutenant to serve his nation.
As soon as the Forardis arrived in the Confederacy, they were immediately under fire from all sides, constantly besieged by humans, orcs, and goblins. The Confederates showed no mercy to the invaders and delighted in eliminated Forardi officers. After only three years of serving in the conflict, Plinio found himself colonel of his regiment. His rapid promotion was mostly due to battlefield attrition of the officers above, rather than any tactical brilliance of his own. Still, compared to his predecessors, Plinio seemed the very model of a skilled military leader. He kept the majority of his men alive, and won a few minor victories against the Bienombes. He returned home with the expeditionary force in 1026.
Following the ignominious retreat from the Confederacy, the Department of the Army was desperate for heroes. Although he was not exactly the hero they wished for, Plinio was the closest thing they had. His life was highly publicized, and he married the daughter of a Department legend in order to further his own. He then was the youngest colonel to ever be promoted to general, and was assigned a command of his own, sent to lead the garrison at Fort Leek. In the decade since, he has begun raising a family in the castle town and has not had any major failures, nor has he had any overwhelming successes, a true mediocrity.
