Fort Leek
Fort Leek is a castle built upon the Mobtens River near the border between Forard and Bamard. This fort is managed by the Forardi Department of the Army, and observes and maintains border security against both threats from the Bamardis and threats from raiders based in the Sypi Confederacy. The fort is well known for its river defenses and strategic position, and has been the focus of several major raids from Confederate tribes over the course of its history. Among civilians, the fort is best known for the hefty taxes charged upon river boat captains who pass under the shadow of the siege weapons installed here.
Purpose / Function
Fort Leek was built primarily to monitor river traffic going up and down the Mobtens River. Major fortifications were also based facing towards land, as Confederate raids proved troublesome. Anti-ship siege weapons were designed and deployed for the walls of Fort Leek, some of which are large enough to sink most river barges with a single shot. This is in conjunction with a large garrison, deployed of several regiments of the Department of the Army.
History
After the Kingdom of Forard gained independence, river traffic along the Mobtens River was unregulated and profitable for many local merchants and traders. The occasional tribal raids were directed at Bamard, rather than south towards Forard. This changed with the Mor Raid in 982 AF. The Mor Tribe in the Sypi Confederacy saw an opportunity for great wealth as materials from the north were stockpiled in the trading community of Linkton. After visiting several old battlefields of the Great War, the Mors mustered an army of thousands of undead that slipped into Forardi territory along the Mobtens River. They surprised and destroyed the garrison at Linkton, and much of the wealth of the town was stolen.
The Department of the Army was harshly criticized by its rivals for allowing this to occur, and they immediately began to take steps to prevent a repeat occurrence. Sites along the river were scouted, and Fort Leek was the final result of their endeavors. The fort has only seen a few minor skirmishes and actions, mostly during the Sypi Civil War after construction was completed. These were never dedicated attempts to take the fortress, but instead were simply efforts by the garrison to drive away threatening forces. Fort Leek has become one of the most profitable Army installations in Forard, as it has allowed them to heavily tax all trade coming down the Mobtens River, creating a solid stream of revenue much to the chagrin of local merchants.
