Fljotareyjar

Also known as the Ferrous Isles. Floating above the surface of Skaney are innumerable magnetic islands, set afloat by Raegeric during the Era of Legends. Large deposits of raw iron sit inside each isle, enabling it to hover above the surface of the mesa at varying altitudes thanks to magnetic forces. Some of these remain in place while others travel along the invisible magnetic flow along the surface, weaving about the mesa in an unseen current. To those who can see or feel magnetism, the sky above Skaney is a beautiful magnetic ocean. Currents, rivers and lakes flow amid this unseen landscape and in the deepest portions of this region, great whirlpools and even magnetic storms rage.

There are many different kinds of islands atop the mesa but most of them are home to alpine or deciduous forests, making these little biomes very diverse but also very competitive. Predators are extremely territorial. Most of the villages dotting the mesa call these islands home but far more are totally uninhabited, territories of terrifying beasts or even mystic lone mages. However, these beasts are immensely useful when seeking components for material or true magic as are the rare herbs found within these forests. Even the trees themselves are useful for a discerning mage but all of this is locked away within the dangers of the Fulgurant Mesa.

Ecosystem

Plant life within this region is primarily defined by the trees topping these isles. Most are alpine or deciduous, lichens and mosses prevalent wihle some isles are home to expansive meadows. Most clusters have at least one island as the heart of a village or settlement, one or two more becoming residential while the rest are left wild, unless a Kraken has claimed an archipelago as its own. Not many isles are suited to farming, residents relying on hunting, fishing or raiding Accian farming villages for food. There are reindeer herders as well.

Unknown to most outsiders, Fljotareyjar is also home to an invisible ocean and unique marine species. Rather than this being a typical sea, these waters comprise of magnetic fields! This is how the islands hover over the sruface of Skaney and this is also how local wildlife navigates. These species have either evolved or been blessed with magic which allows them to live and navigate in this magnetic sea rather than actual ocean waters. Everything from the shores of the magnetic isles down to just above the surface of Skaney is home to unique marine wildlife. On the surface of Skaney itself, þorreyjar, Freshwater lakes and rivers weave through static scrublands and either spill over into Flumen Pontem or flow over the lips of the mesa itself.
