Material Magic
Anyone can perform material magic if they have the knowledge and supplies. This form of magic makes use of the innate elemental connection, the kaithur, of beasts, beings, plants and even inorganic materials. The remains of Emynean species retain their elemental connection even in death and can be tapped into with a bit of energy from a would be caster, though most materials can only be used once. Only enchantment, a kind of true magic, can endure multiple uses. Some examples of materials useful for material magic include Elding Timbr, Elemental Crystals and Isik Gozyaslari.
While elemental magic is most powerful in a living specimen, remains still contain a given amount of magic and can still call upon their given connections. There are also some non-organic materials that contain magic as well, particularly minerals or waters infused with special energy. Many of these come from locations where the Erlithmanil or Aethid have laced magic into the land. Luminescent water from Dawn Ahrayn, ancient dragon fire, Syltharian crystals, ashes of a newborn Bennu Phoenix. There are endless sources for material magic.
Those mages who utilize material magic require these specially charged materials but they also need knowledge and comprehension. These materials must be prepared, combined and triggered precisely to produce a given result. They must understand what items contain which kind of energy and effects as well as understand how these can interact with each other. They must understand how to properly lace these together, whether by placement, intermediary materials or even inscriptions. Finally, they must understand which catalysts will initiate their spells and use a spark of their own life force, their own magic, as a trigger. Then, the magic contained within these items will activate, reaction varying from spell to spell, and the energy within or even the materials themselves will be used up in the process.
Material magic can produce spells ranging from minor tricks to intensely powerful conjurations. Most favorably, they also use very little of the casters energy as the materials themselves fuel the spell. Over the many eons of Emynea's history, incredible spells have been discovered and passed down by scholars and mages alike and some have also been lost to history. Many ancient tomes, scrolls or carvings, hidden away, tucked into family libraries or buried in ancient ruins are scattered throughout the world and record various formula while others are common knowledge. With proper knowledge and the proper materials, the possibilities are boundless.
