Toiryo

Long ago, scientists of the Skylord worked on a vast arcane project, attempting to bring new magics into the world for the elves to control. It went horribly wrong, and instead dragged them into a different dimension, the Tōiryō in elvish, also known as the Far Realm. The elves that returned, causing madness and chaos throughout the areas of modern Kobetsu and Borealisian Commonwealth, twisted, perverted elves called Sōsa Tamashī propagated like a plague across the mountains in central Kokintras, capturing and transforming elves into their ilk.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tōiryō are built like their elvish ancestors, however they are corrupted. Green blood of life transformed into black, long willowy features of the elves are exaggerated approximations of the normal elven proportions. They also are universally present in a series of jagged chitinous plates, giving them an otherworldly appearance all of their own. It's unknown if this is some form of cultural garb (If such a thing exists among the Tōiryō, or if this is a biological function from the corrupted elves of old.

Genetics and Reproduction

It's unknown if the Toiryo biologically procreate, however they do have the ability, and the willingness to engage it, to spread their corruption to mortals of the plain. Since the age of the skylord, where the Toiryo were just corrupted elves, there are a few variants, including the Toihafu, and the Toidowa, which are corruptions of other species that live in the colonies of the Toiryo.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

It's unknown how, because the Toiryo don't appear to have eyes, but the species seems to have an excellent capacity for vision in the dark. It is assumed that's why colonies of this era are almost always found below the mountains in the dark caves deep beneath the earth.

The Toiryo are mainly comprised of High Elves that served the skylord in ancient Kokintras. They were a group of wizards of the court attempting to push the limits of magic to a new level, and thus opened a gate to the Far Realm, in order to explore and discover arcane resources to exploit for their own power. It didn't go great for them. They returned through the gate and attacked the royal guards around the transportation arch and transformed them into more Toiryo, who then started burning a swath through the landscape of the Sky Empire. Eventually, with the intervention of the Skylord himself, and a suprise appearance of the Storm King Regulus XXXX, the Toryo were driven back, and the gate destroyed. Not all were killed however, and the corrupted fled below the mountains, deeper than even the deepest mines of Dulkunbu, and have lived on the planet since.
Tainted Memories Even after being transformed, the Toiryo know their true forms and home. That's part of the drive that causes them to desire to transform the Material Plane into something more hospitable to their corrupted forms. It's less common now than it was directly after the attacks, but those who had lost kin to the Toiryo had to take extra vigilance, because the newly corrupted elves would return to their homesteads, and attack the family that they once knew, transforming them into Toiryo as well.
Protective Resin Upon their arrival back through the gates, the corrupted scientists were surprised that their home no longer welcomed them. The very elements and air of Eoferan attacked them as invaders, and not greeting them like Prodigal sons that had returned. To stave against this, the arcane scientists developed a resin, a black ikor tar-like substance to spread across their bodies, that hardened into the chitin armor that they are so renowned for.
Bearers of Madness The twisted minds and souls of these unfortunate elves carry the gene inside of them of their corruption. Using the connection to the twisted arcana of the far realm, the Toiryo are extremely dangerous spellcasters, both physically and psychically, having a specialization in spellwork that warps the mind and senses, and transforms hunted humanoids into new Toiryo.
