Oni {Erethes} (鬼) (/oʊni/ OH-nee)
Oni are a monstrous race created by Izanami to act as enforcers and servants, Though they have evolved to be an independent species over time, Except for the ones that still primarily live in Meido. The ones on the surface are believed to live in caves or deep in the mountains.
Oni are known for their superhuman strength and have been associated with forces like thunder and lightning, along with their evil nature manifesting in their propensity for murder and cannibalism. They are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads, massive teeth, and occasionally a third eye in the center of the forehead. They are typically depicted with red, blue, black, or yellow colored skin, often wearing either a loincloth or wooden samurai armor and carrying iron or wooden kanabō clubs. They also have three to six digits on each hand and feet tipped with claw-like nails. Oni are able to change their looks to fool their victims into trusting them. Oni can be male or female, but have been predominantly male throughout history.
The majority of people are afraid of Oni, Both in life and in death, But nobody has ever tried to actively hunt Oni, As they always come back just a few days later. Luckily, They're almost never seen by normal townsfolk in Takahara, And they're seen even less by everyone else. If an Oni is killed, It's body will disappear in a pool of grey water, The Oni will then be resurrected and wake up within Meido, The only way an Oni can die for real is old age or being killed while in Meido.
