Portalder
Portalder is the busiest port in Nemel and home to a majority of the knights of the Order of the Waves. The city is named not just for the nearby forest of Alder trees that are utilized by many professions, but also because a quarter of the city, the Piertown section that reaches out over the sea on the east side of the Jetty, is made of alder.
Half of Portalder is on land; this is where most of the shops, inns, homes, and legitimate businesses are located. Traveling south down the main thoroughfare will bring one to the The Jetty; it is a huge stone pier that extends straight out into the Tanthean Sea. The west side of The Jetty is a section of town known as The Quays; it consists of five stone piers that while much smaller than The Jetty are still massive. The Quays house the barracks and dock the ships of the Order of the Waves. Further east is the Order's shipyard and Hippocamp nursery. The east side of The Jetty anchors Piertown, which is a massive wooden structure housing warehouses, bars, shops, and seedy establishments. There are several merchant docks along the west side of Piertown and a large fishing pier extending out from its south.
Fauna & Flora
Portalder is the only site for captive raised Hippocamp.
The Alder tree is used in daily life for much more than building material. It contains tannin for leather tanning, is used to smoke much of the fish catch, red dye is distilled from the outer bark and yellow from the inner, the bark also contains an anti-inflammatory, and the wood is exceptional for string instruments and flutes.
