Seat of Justice
The Seat of Justice can be found at the center of the Free City of Joran. It is the god of balance, Joran's, high temple, and home to the Chief Justice.
The Seat is symmetrical. Worship and offerings are made in the heart on the ground floor; it is known as the Sanctum and is where the Chief Justice, Appellates, and Scales preach to the people. Joran's swords are hung in the center of the wall dividing it from the Inner Sanctum which houses sacred items and offices of the clergy.
Judgement Halls flank the Sanctums on either side. The second floor contains Great Judgement Hall, the Chief Justice's public office, and the treasury. The third floor is the Chief Justice's private quarters.
Passing Judgement
The court at the Seat of Justice is the highest court in the land, but getting there is a long road. The Chief Justice will only pass judgement on specific cases. Circuit Justices travel the land settling disputes for those in rural areas and spreading the Word of Joran, while Justices settle disputes brought to the temples and assist with running the temple. If a judgement is believed to be unbalanced, it can be disputed to an Appellate. Appellates oversee the regional temples in capital cities; bringing an accusation of unbalanced judgement to an Appellate is a serious allegation that will have consequences for either the accuser or the Justice. It is only when the judgement of an Appellate is questioned as unbalanced that the judgement will pass up to the Chief Justice. If clergy of Joran are judged to be unbalanced, depending on the steepness of the imbalance, they could be retrained, demoted, defrocked, or even sentenced to death. Wrongful accusers will face consequences in the form of fines or worse. The Chief Justice also mediates between nations when necessary.
