Louis VII of France

Louis Capet (a.k.a. le Jeune)

Senior King of France from 1137 to 1180. Father of King Philip II.   Louis married three times, and had children by all three wives.   His marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine from 1137 until its annullment in 1152 produced two daughters, Marie, Countess of Champagne and Alix, Countess of Blois. Louis and Eleanor were ill-suited, and their failure to have a son made matters worse. Their marriage was annulled on on the grounds of consanguinity; neverthless their daughers were declared legitimate by the Pope. Louis kept custody of their daughters.   His second marriage, to Constance of Castile from 1154 to her death in 1160, produced two daughters, Margaret of France, Queen Consort of England and Hungary, and Alys of France, Countess of Vexin.   His final marriage, to Adèle of Champagne, from 1160 to his death in 1180, produced his son and heir, Philip II, King of France, and a daugher, Agnes of France, Empress Consort of Byzantium.
