Shadowfell
The Shadowfell, also called the Plane of Shadow, is a parallel plane to the Material Plane. It exists as a bleak echo of the Material Plane, a desolate place full of death and decay. Undead are common in the Shadowfell due to the strong influence of the Negative Energy Plane. Much of the Shadowfell is carved into Domains of Dread, demiplanes created by beings called the Dark Powers in order to imprison creatures of great evil. One of the most notable Domains of Dread is Barovia, a realm ruled by the infamous vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich. The Shadowfell is the opposite of the Feywild, thanks to the opposing influences of the Energy Planes.
During the Spellplague, Shar, who rules a portion of the Shadowfell, managed to redirect the souls of the dead to the plane. Due to this, many souls were made to pass through the Shadowfell before reaching the Fugue Plane in the Astral Sea. Another notable inhabitant of the Shadowfell is the Raven Queen, a deity obsessed with memories. Her servants are the Shadar-Kai, a race of elves influenced by the negative energy imbued in the Shadowfell.
