DURNAN THE WANDERER
N male Illuskan human innkeeper
The quiet but steely proprietor of THE YAWNING PORTAL in WATERDEEP, Durnan runs his tavern and his staff with great efficiency. Given the rowdy nature of some the inn's clientele, his calm authority is often required.
Durnan is a retired adventurer and his bloody experiences perhaps explain why he is a man of few words. Also given his history, newer adventurers would be wise to heed his warning to "stay away" from UNDERMOUNTAIN and trust that he means it when he says entering the subterranean dungeon "isn't a good idea". He is, however, more than happy to profit off of those who are determined to go adventuring beneath Waterdeep - his inn contains an entrance to the Undermountain and he charges would-be scavengers to use the pulley system he has erected in the middle of the bar to help with the long journey downwards.
With his old adventuring partner, MIRT THE MONEYLENDER, Durnan made lots of money from his past exploits and he used his fortune to buy the land containing the little-known entrance to UNDERMOUNTAIN; the ruins of HALASTER's Tower. Durnan has since built his tavern on this plot and continues to earn a living taxing adventurers who come up and down his well and spend at his inn.
