Aurum

Design

The Aurum coin is a striking emblem of Favontille craftsmanship, characterised by its substantial weight derived from a composition of gold, a copper-silver alloy, and a manganese-copper inner core. Its most distinctive feature is the radiant golden core, surrounded by a copper-silver outer ring, lending durability and a captivating visual contrast. The innermost core, crafted from manganese copper, ensures wear resistance, contributing to the coin's long-lasting presence in circulation. A final nickel plating layer covers the entire coin, providing a gleaming, mirror-like finish. Precision is evident in its dimensions, with a 25-millimetre diameter and a 2.5-millimetre thickness, balancing functionality and symbolism. The obverse side features the reigning monarch, King Terys III, in profile. In contrast, the reverse side proudly displays the royal shield, featuring the Wyvern of Raan Ritaan. The coin bears the inscription In Gratia Angelorum representing the nation's motto.

Manufacturing process

The manufacturing process of the Aurum coin involves meticulous stages of production. It begins with alloying gold and silver to create the core, then by rolling the alloy into thin sheets cut into precise circular blanks. These blanks undergo individual pressing between engraved coin dies in a specialised press, resulting in intricate designs. Rigorous quality control ensures flawless coins, which undergo a finishing process, including polishing and occasional gilding. Highly skilled artisans, often affiliated with prestigious guilds in Favont, orchestrate this process, embodying specialised craftsmanship and expertise. While lower social strata, including low-labour servants and indentured workers, may participate in metal mining, coin crafting remains the exclusive domain of these artisans.

History

The ₳1 coin's history is deeply rooted in Favontille culture and socio-economic dynamics. It originated during the reign of King Leric, symbolising the nation's resilience. Initially featuring King Leric's profile and a depiction of the dragon's demise, the design evolved to depict the reigning monarch and the royal shield. The coin's rarity underscores stark socio-economic disparities within Favontille society. It is common among the privileged classes but exceedingly rare for the indentured population, who are forbidden from possessing money and excluded from the formal economy. The Aurum becomes a coveted symbol of wealth and freedom for the marginalised, driving a clandestine underground market. This divide highlights profound socio-economic inequalities in Favontille society.
