Questar
Which one of Questar's little birds has led you to his Oasis, eh?Questar was an archmage who ran the Glittering Oasis, a popular inn in the City of Brass.
Physical Appearance
Questar was a rotund man with a large beard and a ruddy face. He was usually smiling, flashing golden teeth, or laughing loudly. He typically wore an innkeeper's apron over mage's robes.
Personality
Questar was a jovial, friendly mage who had always dreamed of owning an inn. He was loud and boisterous, and usually referred to himself in the third person. In the running of his inn, he could clean cups, deliver drinks, etc. using his magical abilities, and did so when necessary. He preferred the look and experience of cleaning the cups with his apron and handing them to patrons, however. He was usually willing to offer advice and even modest magical help to patrons who were in need and had good motivations, particularly if they were willing to aid him in smuggling slaves out of the city.
Goals & Motivations
Questar wishes primarily to run his inn and retire in peace. He chose the City of Brass, however, for two reasons: The first is that there would be a market for a magically air-conditioned inn, well suited to his talents. The second was that he thought he could do some good for the slave population there. He is not interested in overthrowing the entire government or starting a revolution; he merely wants to help those he can while living his dream.
History
Questar bought an exorbitant number of slaves for the running of his inn, particularly children. All his slaves were well treated and well fed, marked by collars padded for the slave's comfort. Those in the City of Brass knew to leave Questar's slaves alone unless they committed some significant offense, lest they incur the wrath of the powerful magic user. Questar called the children "his little birds" and used them to advertise for the Glittering Oasis throughout the city, though in truth advertisement was not necessary. When he could, he would send slaves back to the Material plane to places where he knew they could find work. They would be provided a stipend to get them started in life. Very few had the means to contact Questar afterwards, but he was content with his efforts nonetheless.
Because of the expense of this operation, Questar barely broke even in his operation of the Oasis despite charging obscene rates and always having a packed house. This suited him well, as he was never in the business to make money in the first place.
Questar met the Battleborn when they were in the City for the Sultan's Tournament. They stayed in his inn, and Eninn Stonehearth aided him in smuggling many slaves out of the city. This interaction endeared the archmage to the deep gnome, and he became a trusted contact. He aided Eninn in establishing a Deep Warden informant network in the city as well as assisting her in buying spell scrolls.
