Dwarf

Ruined kingdoms in once ancient grandeur, lost halls carved into the roots of mountains, the echoing of picks and hammers in deep mines and blazing forges, a commitment to clan and tradition, and a burning hatred of goblins and orcs – these common threads unite all dwarves.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Bold and hardy, dwarves are known as skilled warriors, miners, and workers of stone and metal. Though they stand well under 5 feet tall, dwarves are so broad and compact that they can weigh as much as a human standing nearly two feet taller. Their courage and endurance are also easily a match for any of the larger folk. Dwarven skin ranges from deep brown to a paler hue tinged with red, but the most common shades are light brown or deep tan, like certain tones of earth. Their hair, worn long but in simple styles, is usually black, gray, or brown, though paler dwarves often have red hair. Male dwarves value their beards highly and groom them carefully.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dwarves reach maturity at twenty, and are considered elderly at roughly three-hundred.

Ecology and Habitats

Dwarves, as one of the most ancient races of all, are found nearly anywhere in Cineres. They are primarily found in the Alpines and Frostrise, and especially within caves or mountain halls. Due to orcish incursions, however, there is only one independant hold left. This has caused dwarven refugees to be found all across the world.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dwarves eat as much as humans do, but drink far more.

Behaviour

Due to their long lifespan, good memory, and tragic past, the overwhelming majority of dwarves suffer from extreme depression. Dwarves have suffered through the worst fall from grace in recorded history, and they have lost hope for their peoples' future. Some young and naive dwarves have begun attempting to reclaim their past holds and build new settlements, but the old and experienced dwarves will always be there to discourage them.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Dwarven social structure is extremely loose. They are fond of anyone who can participate in dwarven crafts and culture, and they are especially fond of anyone who drinks with them. Wealth still plays a massive role in their hierarchy, but that custom has declined ever since the collapse of the Dwarven Empire.

Facial characteristics

Every male dwarf has facial hair, no matter the environment they find themselves in. It is unknown why, but it is most certainly the truth.

Average Intelligence

Dwarves are intelligent yet ignorant in many situations. Their pride or feelings of doom often take hold over the truth.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dwarves have most of the same sensory capabilities as humans, but their vision is much better in the darkness.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Once part of the Dwarven Empire, dwarves now only have one nation to call their own. The stagnate Dwarven Remnants.

Average Technological Level

Young dwarves are always at the forefront of technological innovation, but their race's knack for inventing new technologies has severely declined.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Dwarves speak common and dwarven.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Dwarven culture is based around steel, mining, smithing, wealth, and getting utterly shitfaced with likeminded individuals. This culture of cheer has become far less apparent over the recent decades, but it still remains in many places.

History

Dwarven history is extremely long and complicated, so it is recommended to take a look at the historical timeline. https://www.worldanvil.com/w/forgotten-waters-winterfoxtrot/t/history-of-numira-timeline   In short, the Dwarven Empire was one a mighty and prosperous nation, along with the strongest armies and the wealthiest coffers. The pure strength of their steel forced the orc and goblin clans to leave the ancestral dwarven regions, but they would eventually come back. While the dwarves grew rich and ignorant, the orcs continued getting stronger. After nearly a thousand years of golden age, the dwarves lost everything in a matter of decades. Now in their empire's place is the Dwarven Remnants, a small and weak nation full of dwarves devoid of any hope for the future.
