Capaccuna (Kah-pahk-KOO-nah)

by hughpierre

Purpose

Capaccuna is a genealogical record of the Innoit nobility. It serves as a comprehensive document written in the Quipu Recording System that honours the current and extinct noble lineages that have held one of the three panaka trinity.

Document Structure

Clauses

The capaccuna consists of an elaborate arrangement of primary and secondary cords, each denoting three noble houses and their branching descendants and offshoots. The cords' colour, in particular, indicates the significance of their role in society:
  • Red cords signify the ruling Tupaq Yupankip Panakan and emperors of their time
  • Yellowish cords represent the religious Lluq'i Yupankip Panaka
  • Blue cords denote the exceptional standing of the Apu Mayta Panaka Ayllu
All cord sets are linear. One end is anchored to a frame, from where 4000ft of dyed cotton or camelid strings convey the different panaka era. The only thing that remains constant are the names attributed to the Trinity: the Condor, the Cougar and the Snake. With one ayllu being displaced by another and taking up the distinction.   On the capaccuna, each such begins with their original ayllu name, that spawned that specific panaka, alongside their founder's name on a branch cord. Whenever a panaka line ended, a pendent was tied at the end to mark its discontinuation. The ends representing the current panakan are left to dangle so that more may be tied to it.

Condor Panaqa

The golden fibres are a humble string chosen to represent the spirituality associated with the panaka.   According to the strings, the current iteration has the most blood ties to the others.

Cougar Panaqa

The royal cords of the emperor are the thickest of the three in order to grant a strong structure to best bear the weight of the others.   It is made of a composite of plant and animal fibres

Snake Panaqa

The strands of rare silk are the thinnest and most uniform and most expensive set because it is the shortest.   There have only been one transference in the history of the snake.

Publication Status

Only the top quipucamayocs can touch the capaccuna. It is kept in a secure closet of the Great Quipu Repository, hanging from 14 rows of ceiling beams.

Historical Details

Background

The Panakan

Historically, the 'panaka' title just denoted the family group who was in charge of a clan or petty kingdom. Panakan has since come to refer to a royal lineage or bloodline within the Innoit Empire that is tied to the political power of the emperor. Each Panakan is a prestigious house, distinguished by their ancestry to past rulers or legendary figures, maintaining political influence and succession rights.   In practice, they are no different than any other ayllu, but in identifying with one of the trinity, these noble families play crucial roles in governance, spiritual and military affairs. Barring these three; any number of other panakan, with various associated animals, have risen and fallen over the years.

Public Reaction

Misconception

Due to the name, the public mostly perceives each panaka as having a long unbroken history. However, only the dedicated historians would bother to remember the smaller ayllu name from where future dynasty founders were born and raised.

Legacy

Prestige Controversy

Ayllu of the "condor" and "snake" title were turned over just twice and once respectively. But the "cougar", symbolic of the right to rule, is the most contested seat with several civil wars and usurpation marking its history.   One group, or another, has been known to make snide remarks regarding the materials that make up a certain panaka's history. The snake having the most prestigious, for example. In contrast, the actual ruling panaka is made-up of the most common and mundane materials; not even being consistent along its length.
