Darkjaw Chapter 14: Disgrace of the Drakewarden
General Summary
Note: this story takes place immediately after the events of GB Chapter 40: The End Games .
Part 1: The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
- Darkjaw flees the city of Necropolis in disgrace, ordering the Necropolis Guard to open the front gate as he angrily soars through in Lamarvagon form. After this, the Necropolis Guard are given the orders that Darkjaw has abandoned his post and is a traitor to Necropolis, ordered to kill him on sight if he attempts to enter the city again.
- After the Shadow King leaves the arena, he disemminates his orders to the Death Minister & Lady Gaelica. Lady Gaelica will be responsible for coordinating the Darkjaw manhunt, whether she chooses to participate herself or send an elite team in her place. The Death Minister is instructed to test his new recruits (Commander Kringle & Sister Glaecia) by bringing them into the fold however he sees fit. Lady Gaelica decides that killing Darkjaw is now "beneath her" and arranges to enlist Commander Kringle, Dr. Plaezus & Spoonmaster as her elite hunting party. Dr. Plaezius is promised his freedom if he succeeds on the mission, but is really being sent away to either die or leave (the Shadow King despises his faith to another god and wants him disposed of). The Death Minister convinces Commander Kringle to join this team as his test for the position of Lt. Commander of the Roving Shadows (Lady Gaelica's second in command) after he completes his initiation at the Temple of Rebirth. After sending him off, he takes Sister Glaecia to the Temple to meet her converted sisters and undertake the trials placed before her by the Caring Pharaoh.
- Commander Kringle, Dr. Plaezius & Spoonmaster head out into the arctic wastes to find the rogue ranger. Eventually, they track him hours away from the city, hunkering down in the frozen wastes while still in Lamarvagon form. They surround him in a triangle and initate their assault, but not before Darkjaw notices Kringle & Plaezius to avoid any surprises.
Combat: Darkjaw vs. Jaw's Hand

Round 1
- Spoonmaster: Casts Shadow Scorch (5th level) at Darkjaw, who succeeds on his save and takes 18 fire damage.
- Dr. Plaezus: Casts Sacred Flame (cantrip) at Darkjaw, who avoids it. He then casts Spiritual Weapon (4th level) and stabs Darkjaw with a spiritual scythe, dealing 12 slashing damage. "Revenge is so sweet, now I can truly finish off your people."
- Darkjaw: Flies up and unleashes Artcic Venom Breath at Dr. Plaezius, who succeeds and only takes 27 cold damage.
- Commander Kringle: Flies up and critically skewers Lamarvagon with a Holiday Charge & Divine Smite (4th level), dealing 21 piercing/8 radiant/34 radiant/50 radiant/26 radiant (139 total). This completely destroys Lamarvagon and carries 96 points of damage over to Darkjaw, dealing a significant blow. As a Legendary Action, Darkjaw draws his sword and slashes at Kringle for 21 damage.
Round 2
- Spoonmaster: Tosses two Spoons into the soaring Darkjaw, but the wrathful warden parries them both with his freshly drawn blade and spots Spoonmaster. After this turn, Darkjaw fires an acidic explosive arrow at Kringle, dealing 15 damage. (1 Acidic Explosive Arrow)
- Dr. Plaezus: Knowing that he might be betrayed by this hunting party after killing Darkjaw, Plaezius holds onto his Power Word Kill. Instead, he points a finger and casts Finger of Death (7th level), dealing 69 necrotic damage that ignores Darkjaw's resistance. After this turn, Darkjaw fires double-docked Paralytic Gas arrows at Spoonmaster (knowing what he is capable of with that Stunning Strike), dealing 20 damage to Spoonmaster & paralyzes him. Due to failing both saves, he will not get a save on his next turn. (2 Paralytic Gas Arrows)
- Darkjaw: Puts his sword away and fires three double-docked arrowshots at each target on the field. The first one is parried by Kringle's Peppermint Lance, the second one nat20s Dr. Plaezius for 26 piercing/10 fire/28 acid/56 thunder (120 total), destroying him on the spot in a acidic shockwave. The third one hits Spoonmaster for 49 damage, but he Deflects Missiles and reduces the explosive impact to 20. (3 Acidic Explosive Arrows, 3 Explosive Arrows)
- Commander Kringle: Pulls out his Holly Jolly Greatsword, stating "Your men killed mine, it's only fair." and beheads Darkjaw, then cleaves his dusting body into two with the second strike. Darkjaw's head screams "Noooo!" as it fades, knowing the fate that awaits him back in Zalcovia.
Aftermath
- Commander Kringle snaps Spoonmaster back into things and rides back to Necropolis. He is immediately taken to the Temple of Rebirth and initated into undeath by Sister Glaecia, whose test was to successfully perform the Rites of Wightdom on the centaur she's grown to love. After her success, Sister Glaecia is initiated by the Caring Pharaoh herself, who is aware of her husband's treachery but unaware that Commander Kringle killed him (this was deliberately kept from her by the Death Minister, by order of the Shadow King). Commander Kringle is then led back to the Roving Shadows Command Center (RSCC) and given the title of Lt. Commander of the Roving Shadows, second to Lady Gaelica herself. She briefs him on the Shadow King's plans and begins coordinating the troop placements.
- In a day's time, Darkjaw reforms in the Heart Chamber, awaited by a sadistically smiling Shadow King.
Part 2: Darkjaw the Waste Warden
- Darkjaw immediately tries to run, but the Shadow King pins him to the ground with Daidrokinesis. He mocks and berates Darkjaw for his failure and cowardice, acknowledging his own failed judgement in selecting him as Commander of his army. He tells him that Lady Gaelica has reclaimed her position with Lt. Commander Kringle as her right hand, renaming her army back to the Roving Shadows & preparing for the global assaults that Darkjaw was originally promised. However, Darkjaw's undying punishment has only just begun; the Shadow King declares that he is no longer a member of the Shadow Triad, and as such is no longer worthy of his Daidrin Gaioforce gifts. With that, he lifts Darkjaw into the air and begins the magical process of tearing the Gaioforce from Darkjaw's soul, causing him unbearable agony as Solya finally arrives in the chamber. She watches with tears as Darkjaw's punishment continues.
- Once the Gaioforce is extracted from his soul, the demonic lycan retakes its ethereal space, converting Lord Darkjaw (the Wrathful Pharaoh) back into Darkjaw the Waste Warden (Werewarden Ranger subclass). Exhausted from the effort, Darkjaw transforms into a saber-tooth tiger hybrid and lunges at the Shadow King, but he simply passes through his projection. As he lands, the King fires a powerful torrent of Dark Lightning into his body, then casts Fractal Clamp to make sure Solya cannot teleport him anywhere as he senses her intent.
- "Do not worry, while you may not longer bear the gifts of the Mummy Lord or the Daidrin Gaioforce, you are still tied to the longevity of its heart. You have a new job now, one that you will serve for eternity under my reign. You will scour the arctic wastes of Cyregnor, hunt down and kill every dragon you find. True dragons, wyverns, drakes, pseudodragons, all of them. Should you spot the head of a dragon turtle poking over the arctic seas, you will ensure its demise as well. You will be the supplier of dragon corpses for the Roving Shadows, making my undead army the strongest fighting force on Gaion. You will not rest, you will not return to Necropolis or your beloved outside of specific circumstances. You wil be my warden of the wastes, you will not tire, you will hunt until you die. And once you rejuvenate within this chamber, you will immediately head out to do so again. Do you understand your new charge Darkjaw, your eternal punishment?" Darkjaw tries to argue, but the Shadow King casts Shadow Scorch to finish off Darkjaw. He then uses his magic to speed up the rejuvenation process, bringing him back in mere minutes.
- "You can't do this Avernion!" Solya shouts, catching the Shadow King offguard by using his living name. "He may have shown moments of weakness yesterday, but he fought tirelessly to his death to bring me back to the mortal realm. He earned his undead status, for unlike YOU, he actually understands death on a personal level. If anything, his willingness to face his own mortality shows true courage, whereas YOU are the real coward. You will not take him from me, no matter what power you hold over us."
- The Shadow King is taken aback by this outburst, and the archmage & archdruid of death stare into each other in the ultimate standoff. The Shadow King, acknowledging her fury but knowing he still has a string of control over the mummy lord heart, relents, offering a compromise. The Shadow King's punishment shall stand, but Solya will have the ability to call him back to her side for 1d4 hours; once used, she cannot use it again for 1 week. She appreciates this, but states that it's not enough; she will need companionship for the time he is gone, someone to care for. The Shadow King agrees to this, stating that he has just claimed the Gaiobros' t-rex companion and is working on some "improvements"; she could care for him as a pet. Solya agrees, but recognizes her leverage and makes one more demand. She and Darkjaw can no longer conceive a child, so she wants one for herself. The Shadow King notes the convenience in that the Gaiobros travel with two children, one of which greatly interests the Shadow King (The Boy) while the other could make a good daughter for Solya (The Girl). He agrees to have his agents capture these children as soon as possible and deliver The Girl to Solya. With the deal made, The Shadow King & The Caring Pharaoh shake on it with Daidrin infusions, magically binding each other to their word.
- The Shadow King first creates an item to grant Solya her ability to call Darkjaw; he Daidrokinetically calls the Lash of Mercy from Darkjaw's pockets, who attempts to resist but is called off with a quick headshake from Solya. The Shadow King performs some magic on the whip (modifying the Command-based enchantments already on it) and transforms it into a lash made of shadowy chains. He cracks the whip onto Darkjaw, who shrieks in pain as a prong collar of shadowy chains forms around his neck and connects to the whip in the king's hand. The Shadow King floats the whip handle over to Solya and dubs it "The Leash of Disgrace", saying that when he is gone, she just needs to crack the whip and he will materialize at its end in whatever position/form he was in at that moment. With this portion of the deal satisfied, the Shadow King dissaparates to complete the other aspects of their deal. Solya takes one long look at her husband before the Shadow King whisks him away to begin his charge, seemingly a look of worry mixed with disappointment in him.
Part 3: Darjkaw's Wrath
- Having never been more angry about anything in his entire life, Darkjaw goes on a hunting rampage in the arctic mountains a few hours outside of Necropolis. He searches for and eventually finds a Young Frost Dragon, and decides to get vengeance against a creature that has caused him so much anguish. Despite this rage, he hunts stealthily and gets the drop on his quarry. At this time, Darkjaw is in his hybrid Polar Bear form, giving him a +1 to Strength based checks/saves/attacks/damage, a +1 to AC (19), Bite ( 2d10 piercing), Claw ( 2d8 slashing).
Combat: Darkjaw vs. Young Frost Dragon
Initiative
- Darkjaw: 17
- Young Frost Dragon: 14, 0/133 HP.
Surprise Round
- Darkjaw: Casts Hunter's Mark (1st level) and fires three arrows (1 Paralytic Gas, 1 Dragonfire, 1 Venom) at the dragon. 6 piercing/2 fire/4 Favored Enemy/2 poison/1 Hunter's Mark (15 total) & paralyzes the dragon with the first. 9 piercing/4 fire/4 Favored Enemy/25 fire/1 Hunter's Mark (43 total) & burns the dragon for the second (will deal 4 extra fire damage each turn, dragon can remake the save at the end of each turn). Crit for the third, dealing 7 piercing/10 fire/4 Favored Enemy/22 poison/4 Hunter's Mark (47 total) & poisons the dragon (disadvantage on attack rolls & saving throws, but is currently paralyzed). In total, Darkjaw deals 105 damage on his opening suprise round, leaving the dragon poisoned, burned & paralyzed.
Round 1
- Darkjaw: Leaps on his quarry and unleashes with his melee werebear strikes. 34 piercing/1 fire damage with his powerful bite, since its a crit. This kills the dragon with a powerful bite to the back of the neck, but Darkjaw tears in with his claws anyway.
The Second Hunt
- Darkjaw prepares to skin, detooth & declaw the dragon, but is instantly reminded of his charge by the Shadow King, who electrocutes him with Dark Lightning. The dragon is whisked away, allowing him to only partially satiate his hunger. Furious, Darkjaw runs off into the wild to continue his endless hunt, seeking larger prey.
- With a 27 Survival check, Darkjaw easily tracks an Adult Frost Dragon to its icy cave in the side of an arctic mountain. The dragon hunter creeps his way in with a 25 Stealth check, narrowly sneaking past the dragon's 21 Passive Perception. Darkjaw gets into position and unleashes three arrows on his prey, initiating a surprise attack. He is in Saber-Tooth Tiger hybrid form.
Combat: Darkjaw vs. Adult Frost Dragon (in lair)
Initiative
- Darkjaw: 21, 0/200 HP, 2/4 1st level, 3/3 2nd, 3/3 3rd, 1/3 4th, 0/1 5th
- Lair: 20
- Female Dragon: 19, 0/200 HP, 2/3 Legendary Resistances
- Male Dragon: 19, 39/200 HP, 1/3 Legendary Resistances
Surprise Round
- Darkjaw: Casts Hunter's Mark (1st level). Unleashes a Paralytic Gas Arrow, an Acidic Explosive Arrow, & an Explosive Arrow at the dragon. Whether its the nerves or the blind anger, he completely misses with the Parayltic Arrow, but connects with the dragon on the last two. 5 piercing/6 fire/2 Hunters Mark/4 Favored Enemy/9 acid (26 total) & 6 piercing/1 fire/2 Hunters Mark/4 Favored Enemy/13 thunder (26 total) for 52 damage with his opening barrage. He moves around and Hides (26 Stealth) as a free action, since he is within his Favored Terrain and already perched behind the icy rocks of the cave. (-1 Paralytic Gas Arrow, -1 Acidic Explosive Arrow, -1 Explosive Arrow)
- Legendary Action: The dragon makes a 23 Perception check to find his assailant, but cannot locate the ranger.
Round 1
- Darkjaw: Reveals his hiding spot by unleashing three more arrows; Paralytic Gas, Venom & Acidic. Hits the Paralytic Arrow & crits both of the other two. Paralytic does 9 piercing/3 fire/3 Hunters Mark/4 Favored Enemy/1 poison (20 total) and would've paralyzed the dragon if they did not use their Legendary Resistance to succeed. Venom does 15 piercing/6 fire/8 Hunter's Mark/24 poison (53 total) & does not poison the dragon. Acidic does 15 piercing/10 fire/2 Hunter's Mark/4 Favored Enemy/22 acid (53 total) & does not cause acid burn to the dragon. Darkjaw uses his Bonus Action to hide again, as the dragon is too familiar with his hiding spots at this point to do it as a free action. The dragon uses a Legendary Action to perceive and finally see past Darkjaw's stealth (20 Stealth roll vs. 25 Perception). (-1 Paralytic Gas Arrow, -1 Acidic Arrow, -1 Venom Arrow)
- Lair: Knowing where Darkjaw is now, the dragon causes a 30 ft high/30 ft long semi-cylindrical ice wall to erect in front of Darkjaw, trapping him in a small space between it and the cave wall.
- Female Dragon: Angered by being so close to death in less than 10 seconds, the dragon flies atop the icy cylinder he creates and unleashes a torrent of Cold Breath at the ranger. He fails his save and takes 25 cold damage due to his armor's resistance. The dragon then flies just outside of the top of the cylinder; out of arrow range if Darkjaw is within the cylinder, but close enough to get an opportunity attack if Darkjaw tries to move out of it.
Round 2
- Darkjaw: Knowing it would take too long to hack his way out, not being entirely certain where the dragon is flying, & not knowing what else might be in the cave (reserving his 5th level spell slot for this last reason), Darkjaw uses a Bonus Acton to transform into a hybrid Polar Bear (+1 to Strength mod) and fires a Vine Grapple arrow at the icy ceiling to get out of the cylinder. He uses his movement to get out, then finds himself face to face with the dragon. Still having two attacks left, Darkjaw unleashes a Bite attack & a Claw attack, dealing a crit Bloodfire Bite for 17 piercing/10 fire/4 Favored Enemy/2 Hunter's Mark (33 total) and slaying the dragon. In lieu of the third strike, Darkjaw uses his last attack to triumphantly leap from his perch onto the body of his prize, which vanishes shortly after in a shadowy haze. As the dark smoke settles, Darkjaw hears an arrival at the front of the cave and looks up to see another Adult Frost Dragon standing at the entrance to the cave with a dead yeti in its mouth, a bulky & scarred male. It is at this point that Darkjaw realizes two things: the dragon he just killed was actually a female, and the dragon who just arrived was in the midst of a Frost Dragon mating ritual where the male proves himself a worthy lover by proving himself a worthy hunter. (-1 Vine Grapple Arrow)
- Lair: The male dragon, angered at the loss of his potential mate, drops the yeti and bashes the ground, causing icicles to fall from the roof of the cave onto Darkjaw for 13 piercing damage.
- Male Dragon: Roars with indominable might to invoke his Frightful Presence to try and scare Darkjaw. However, Darkjaw has seen plenty of dragons and is emboldened by the hunt, showing no fear and roaring back in Polar Bear form. The dragon almost seems to respect this, but rushes forward to unleash a bite & two claw attacks. The bite crits for 18 piercing/5 cold damage due to Darkjaw's armor resistance (23 total), the first claw whiffs but the second claw rakes Darkjaw for 11 slashing. The dragon stays right up on Darkjaw, watching his every move. In retaliation, Darkjaw claws him for 22 slashing damage.
Round 3
- Darkjaw: Casts Guardian of Nature (4th level, drops Hunter's Mark) and becomes a Primal Beast; his already ragged polar bear fur becomes even more wild and feral as he roars with glee. He then unleashes a full multiattack of Bloodfire Bite, Glaive of Reckoning & Bloodfire Bite. The first bite misses, the glaive hits for 10 slashing/9 lightning/4 Favored Enemy/5 force/17 reckoning damage (45 total), and the last bite hits for 14 piercing/1 fire/4 Favored Enemy/4 force (23 total). Darkjaw stands his ground and roars. The dragon responds to this unexpected capability by beating his wings (2 Legendary Actions) and knocking Darkjaw prone with 13 bludgeoning damage, then flies 40 ft up & into the cave.
- Lair: The dragon, sensing the danger of this hunter, causes the cave to fill with icy fog, heavily obscuring the area to remove Darkjaw's attack advantages while still being able to sense him. Darkjaw takes 2 cold damage from the fog.
- Male Dragon: Knowing exactly where his enemy is, the dragon unleashes a torrent of Cold Breath, dealing 31 cold damage to Darkjaw. Darkjaw loses Concentration and drops Guardian of Nature. The dragon then flies to the highest perch of his cave, believing that Darkjaw cannot easily reach him there. If only he understood; distance is Darkjaw's friend.
Round 4
- Darkjaw: Not knowing exactly where the dragon is, Darkjaw makes a 26 Perception check (thanks to Favored Terrain) to detect the dragon. He then uses the cover & natural environment to hide with a 22 Stealth check. The dragon uses a Legendary Action to make a 30 Perception check, easily locating his prey. Takes 4 cold damage for being in the fog.
- Lair: Knowing where he is and seeing the cylinder that Darkjaw came out of when he arrived, the dragon causes a similarly structured ice wall to trap Darkjaw within his hiding spot, but makes it 20 ft (believing that if Darkjaw tries to escape, he will move his full movement like he did when he got out before). This causes the other ice wall to crumble away.
- Dragon: Does not regain his Breath Weapon, so instead flies down stealthily from where Darkjaw last saw him to hide at the mouth of the cylinder, 13 Stealth check to barely beat Darkjaw's Passive Perception. As such, Darkjaw does not know that he flew down and still believes him to be perched up top.
Round 5
- Darkjaw: Uses the same Vine Grapple arrow technique to get out of the hole, moving his full 35 ft. However, this immediately incurs a surprise opportunity attack from the dragon, dealing 17 piercing/2 cold (19 total). Seeing the dragon so close to him, Darkjaw puts away his bow and unleashes a Bite & Claw attack, dealing 18 piercing/5 fire/4 Favored Enemy (27 total) and missing the claw. Not wanting to go back in the hole, but not having enough movement to go anywhere else, Darkjaw casts Guardian of Nature (4th level) again as a Great Tree, giving him 10 Temp HP & advantage on Constitution saving throws. The dragon uses his wings (2 Legendary Actions) to knock Darkjaw prone again for 14 bludgeoning damage (10 to Temp HP, 4 to him) and throw him back in the hole, which deals an additional 6 bludgeoning damage as he falls 20 ft down. (10 total dealt from this Legendary Action, 29 total dealt in the turn, -1 Vine Grapple Arrow). Takes 5 cold damage from being in the fog.
- Lair: The dragon causes more icicles to crash down into the hole, dealing 13 piercing to Darkjaw.
- Dragon: Does not regain his Breath Weapon, much to his annoyance. Instead, he flies 40 ft away loudly, then stealthily flies to the other side of the cylinder (9 Stealth check). This time, Darkjaw is not fooled and knows exactly what his foe is up to.
Round 6
- Darkjaw: Instead of climbing up again, Darkjaw reverts to his Winged Dragonborn form (default) as a Bonus Action, needing flight to properly deal with this fight. He then casts Twinfire (5th level) to the spot where he heard the dragon go, right above the cylinder. The dragon fails both Dex saves, but uses two Legendary Resistances to succeed on each one. As such, the total output deals 24 fire damage to the dragon & 94 to the cylinder from the impact, destroying it entirely. The dragon recognizes the Draconic power of the spell and is surprised to see a mere mortal wielding it. Free of his icy prison, Darkjaw uses his 50 ft fly speed to get away from the dragon, not needing to provoke any opportunity attacks. Takes 7 cold damage from the fog.
- Lair: The dragon re-ups the fog, but deals only 3 cold damage to Darkjaw.
- Dragon: Does not regain his breath weapon, causing him to roar in frustration. Instead, he flies right at the aerial Darkjaw and unleashes a deadly multiattack. The bite hits for 19 piercing/4 cold (23 total), which knocks Darkjaw unconscious/pre-dusting mode. With pleasure, the dragon unloads his two claw strikes on the disintegrating body of Darkjaw, scattering him to icy dust across the cave. Bloodied & battered, the dragon lands and tends to his wounds, eventually consuming part of the yeti and settling down to rest in his new lair. Before he drifts off into slumber, he acknowledges the power this mysterious hunter brough with him with respect.
Aftermath
- A day later, Darkjaw rejuvenates in the Heart Chamber and sees Solya waiting for him, who mockingly asks "How was work babe?". He can tell that she is still miffed at him for his previous actions, but he does not care as much as he expected. Rather, a sadistic smile creeps across his face. Despite everything that has happened to him, from the betrayal of his "friends" to his defeat by Gaelica and supposed punishment, Darkjaw (ironically) feels more alive than he has since the old days of slaughtering Sun Elves. As the Shadow King's projection eventually comes in to send Darkjaw back to the wastes & Solya leaves him with the cold shoulder, the werewarden realizes that this "punishment" is what he has always wanted; an endless hunt. As he apparates in the wastes (not far from the cave he just attacked), Darkjaw gleefully soars up to the mountain to avenge himself against yesterday's foe. Minutes later, he exists the cave covered in blood and slams his old greatsword into the ground at the cave mouth, as a symbolic gesture. He soars off into the blizzarding wastes, welcoming his new life with a triumphant roar.
