Regent of the Ar’pata Atoll

Balgren Reefshield is Regent of Ar'Pata Atoll, meaning he serves as the leader of the Ar'Pata people. Born the eldest son of the most powerful of the Ar'Pata clans, Balgren's life was expected to be one of service to his clan and his people. Balgren has served as Regent since his mother, Trezelda, abdicated her position and he was elected by his clan to serve in her stead. He became known for his stoic leadership, respectful of his duty to his people above all else. Thus, his time spent with Valzu Kevin-Kevin surprised and alarmed several other clans. Though some dismissed their relationship as Balgren "tending to his wild coral," he knew it was more than that. He knew, equally, that it could not last. He was bound to this place, and she was bound to the Vast. He still kindles some hope in his chest that the next time she finds herself on the Atoll, she'll stay. That union resulted in another unexpected development--the birth of his son, Azarki Kevin-Kevin. His offers of a place for Azarki (and for Valzu) among the Ar'Pata people have been gently, but firmly rebuffed. Over time, he came to agree with Valzu that Azarki should be allowed to sail his own path, free from familial pressures.
