Taminily

"Should you, or any other member of this delegation, find it meet to live a slave, then abide as your conscience allows, but as for me, Mr Ginet, I will not be remembered by posterity for my cowardice and submission. Be I the first or be I the only, be it tomorrow or be it years hence in my infirm, God as my witness, I will die a free man!"
Taminily, officially the Taminil Republic (Taminil: Repoplé Taminilais [ʁepople tamɨnɨle]), is a country in northern Eussis. It also holds a number of colonies across the world, possessing one of the world's largest empires. It shares it single land border with the Holy Enzimian Empire, and a maritime border with Vrezia in its far north at the Gelden Strait. The country occupies the northern third of Eussis, stretching from the Taminil Lowlands in the south to the tip of Eussis where it nearly meets with Sossis along the Gelden Strait. Taminily is a unitary constitutional republic with its capital city at Saïn Piđaro; other major urban areas include Jiöđerâ, Acamènté, Jànaloux, and Pèrigiois.   Taminily was settled during the Iron Age by Altic people migrating from the south. The peoples of Taminily first came into contact with the Varaso Kingdom in the 14th century, and much of the Taminil Lowlands was annexed into the kingdom under the reign of Aleixo in 1728. From this point the lower portion of Taminily was ruled by the Varasos under the authority of a Marqué, while the upper highlands were a patchwork of tribes and clans. Over the course of the next three centuries the Varaso Empire would expand northward to the tip of Eussis, though their control was challenged by rebellion several times and much of the northern half of Taminily is largely uninhabitable and was only under nominal control of Varas.   In 2349 a rebellion broke out in the highlands following the imposition of enclosures on the commons of the region. While this was being suppressed by Varas, in 2350 Enzim invaded a weakened Varaso Empire and began making rapid headway into the heart of the empire. Various Taminil clans opted to side either with Varas or Enzim, though the Marqué of Taminily and thus the official government of the region sided with Enzim, and Taminil assistance to the Enzimian side is seen as critical to the ultimate Enzimian victory over Varas. Following the collapse of the Varaso Empire, while Enzim was consolidating its new territory, Taminily devolved into a patchwork of warring petty kingdoms as the central authority collapsed. In 2372 the newly formed Holy Enzimian Empire invaded Taminily and brought them into their new empire, recreating the old Varaso province of Taminily. Following an extremely violent revolt in 2390, the province was reformed into the semi-independent Kingdom of the Taminils under the suzerainty of Enzim. Over the next centuries the Taminil people would convert to Furanism under the Enzimians.   During the latter 26th and 27th centuries, the "Age of Absolutism", the independence of the Kingdom of the Taminils would be eroded as the power of the Enzimian Emperor grew, the power of the church waned, and power in the empire centralised. The Taminil Revolution of 2691 to 2698 overthrew Enzimian rule in Taminily and produced the Declaration of the Rights of All Men, later codified as part of the Taminil constitution. Inspired by Enlightenment ideals and national sentiment, the Taminil Republic was created. Initially meant to be a true republic, the excesses of some of the revolutionaries and material support of the Taminil nobility eventually saw the provisional republic overthrown and replaced by a constitutional monarchy under Engèn I. This government was first officially recognised in 2696 by Areltya. In 2698, as

part of the Treaty of Ándalo, Enzim relinquished claims on Taminily and recognised their independence. Several wars between Enzim and Taminily broke out in the decades that followed, but by the late 28th century tensions had cooled as Taminily began to gain other rivals in Tira Vella and Ros as they competed for colonies while Enzim expanded southwards in Eussis and into Aresra.   Over the past century Taminily has grown to be a major geopolitical and industrial power and is an important centre of art, science, and philosophy. Following its central role in the Enlightenment and success of the republic following the Taminil Revolution, it was seen by many as an example to be emulated, partially inspiring the Vessian Revolution, failed Areltyan Revolution, Hao Rebellion and the Great Revolt in Oecumene, and the Hänekşiş Reforms in the Sunaïd Alginate
