Kelpie

In folklore and myth, kelpies are a subspecies of merfolk, depicted as shape-shifting creatures who inhabit both land and sea. They were often described as being able to shapeshift into human form but their true appearance is that of an aquatic monster.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kelpies vary in appearance. The cause for this variance is unknown to researchers, but there is supposedly a concrete answer within the pages of the lost Deep Grimoire. While their appearance is always unique, kelpies generally resemble fishmen, gill-men, or eel-men.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kelpies are not naturally born and can only exist through the use of a sea sorcery spell, usually carried out by a sea witch.

Behaviour

Kelpies have the ability to harness electrical lifeforce to rejuvenate their own bodies or attack others. This ability must be kept recharged however through the absorption of a mortal's lifeforce at least once a month. Otherwise, the kelpie will die.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Some mortals view becoming a kelpie as a gift, due to the power that comes with it. Others see it as a curse, as a kelpie's true aquatic form will be revealed if they go too long without water or feeding off a mortal's electrical lifeforce--often frightening others and drawing attention to their paranatural characterisitics.
