Galladian Lowlands

This region occupies the area south of the Northern Ricea R. all the way east to the Silver Ocean. The soils are nutrient rich having been fed by ancient sediment from The Spine. This has given rise to large farming communities that support much of Galladia. The largest city in the region is The Crossroads, and the region is primarily defended by Fort Spine’s End.

Geography

Lowlands covered in sediment deposited by The Spine and ancient rivers. Hills extend south into this area from the Spine near Ricea. Coastal plains are often shallowly sloped into marshes and tidal estuaries.

Climate

A large temperate grassland, the region is protected from major storms by the Sibus Peninsula and Arborvale Region. Samller streams run year-round from the Spine, and support significant agricultural activity.

Fauna & Flora

This area is thought to be the birth place of Ekipter , who inhabit the large drainage basin of the Ekips River east of Southmarsh. It is also home to Tenmar who stalk the tall grasses. The flora of the region is largely comprised of various grasses, with small stands of trees scattered across the undulating hills of the countryside. Grasslands gradually give way to denser forest and marshes to the South.

Natural Resources

Agricultural goods, mostly wheat and corn, are the primary goods to flow from this region, with some fishing industries on the coasts. There are no major mineral or ore deposits to speak of, although small mining outposts can be found scattered in the hills near The Spine. Strange herbs can be found in the areas closer to South Marsh.

History

The lowlands have been inhabited since the mergence of agriculture thousands of years ago. For much of the region's history, local settlements of humans and halflings swore fealty to various other kingdoms, including the Alarim and Fenmarin. However, roughly 1,000 years ago, the Ottenia Kingdom, led a large-scale uprising and push the Dwarvish and Elven overlords from "their" land, establishing a roughly feudalistic society, typically governed by humans, in the Lowlands. Power was particularly concentrated in the hands of local mayors or privy councils. The Wars of the Gift ravaged the Lowlands, with Fenmarin, Alarim and Ottenian forces marchings armies across the Lowlands and staging major battles on the region's borders.
By the time the Forefathers arrived, the Ottenian Kingdom was significantly weakened and fractured. Smaller fiefdoms were brough into the fold, and larger holdouts were easily subdued. The Forefathers then built For Crossroads, an enormous tower in the center of the Lowlands at the intersection of the majuor north-south and east-west trade routes. Forefather rule largely saw peace settle upon the Lowlands. However, without a major ruling family or city, the region had little say in the formation of The New Kingdom, and joined the alliance to protect themselves from their old rivals to the South. Today, political leanings are most closely tied to the nearest major city, such as Ricea to the west, Sibus to the southeast, and Arborvale in the north.

Tourism

A badge of honor among merchants of Galladia is having done business in the landmark that is The Crossroads, a tower complex with five stories of shops, stalls and offices.
