Dragons are titanic creatures, believed to be created by or the children of
Clarion, Everburning, an aspect of the God Banner Bearer. Though originally found in five discrete flights — Crystal, Brine, Magma, Cloud, and Umbral — they have since diverged significantly to become many different species. Indeed, scholars are fascinated by the sheer breadth of diversity seen in Dragonkin, believing that this inherent mutability is tied to their
Demon origins, further reinforced by their usage of the
Discordant-descendant language,
Drakish.
Though most Dragonkin grow large, often rivalling elephants in size, these creatures pale in comparison to true Dragons which have no known upper bounds in terms of size. Dragons as large as mountains have been recorded throughout history, though most such accounts only survive from pre-
Disjunction folktales or writings from the
Conclave of the Gelek Çeng whose propensity for Dragon worship makes such accounts suspect.
Dragon Sightings
The
Scofflaws' Guild of
Sigur slew the Crystal Dragon
Tûj Badîn on the
12th of High-Winter, 2 AE during their 62nd foray within the depths of
Felmithril Mine, though this one was notably stunted and seemingly "infected" with
Felmithril.
The
Anadi who have taken up residence within
Äshagyda claim to be following a prophecy foretold by
Çevrilen, a
Dreamweaver of their people. This prophecy foretold a gigantic Dragon slumbering in the depths of a volcano on
Syvat, being sought by two
Dwarves, which they believe is somewhere within
Gol-Kasha.
The skies above the the
Jungle-that-Strays,
Our-Bones-Ground-to-Dust, and many other regions throughout
Refrain are known to literally burn with what is believed to be Dragon's fire, though it is unclear whether there is a literal Dragon doing this, or if it is merely a myth to explain the burning phenomena.
On the
26th of Seed's Dawn, 3 AE during the 71st foray, the Scofflaws — most notably
Urgen Boulderbeard — witnessed the form of a gigantic spectral Dragon emerging from a rift at the heart of the
Great Gorge, apparently being born from the shattered crystal that was found there previously on the
26th of Death's Dusk, 2 AE during the 57th foray. Though locked away (for now), the
Cave Giant who sealed the rift warned that it would keep coming.
Dragon Worship
Though not Gods or even Angels themselves, many groups throughout history have seen the Dragons as being akin to Demi-Gods given their direct connection to Banner Bearer and the
Echoing. Some see them as harbingers of calamity, which they ultimately are, though others see them as being guides and masters of mortals. Indeed, it is widely believed that the Dragons were sent as shepherds of mortals by Banner Bearer, though they became unruly and refused to serve.
The
Çengi specifically believed that the Dragons were the living embodiments of the Gods will, and that they were masters over the
Five Fundamentals — that being Bone, Sweat, Blood, Breath, and Shadow (or
Soul). They sought to emulate the Dragons, and modelled their society around their tyranny.
The
Kobolds see Dragons as their progenitors — being literally born from Dragon eggs after the Disjunction — though unlike the Çengi they hold only worship their own Ancestor Dragon, and merely respect other Dragons as powerful beings. As such, different clutches of Kobolds view one another as
very distant cousins, similar to how
Humans and
Halflings might see one another. One such Ancestor Dragon is
Xudanê Agirî, a Magma Dragon that slumbers within the
Thine-Shir Mountains, progenitor of the
Xudanê Agirî Clutch.
