Sessions 6-7: Glass!

General Summary

STARDAY, 27TH OF ROVA, 4707AR 5th DAY OF THE RISE OF THE RUNELORDS CAMPAIGN   When morning comes, Bethana, an elderly halfling maid who works for Ameiko at the Rusty Dragon approaches you, and she is obviously upset. She tells you that Ameiko did not come out of her room this morning. When Bethana went into the room to look for her, she found a letter from Tsuto to asking Ameiko to meet with him at the Sandpoint Glassworks after midnight*. "With Tsuto it can't be good," she says, "I don't think Ameiko knew he was in town, and I'm sure he is up to no good. Since Sheriff Hemlock’s out of town, you are the only ones I can turn to. I know Ameiko can take care of herself, but please head to the Glassworks and check what is going on there. We must know if Ameiko is safe". The party decides to immediately head to the Glassworks Glassworks.

Investigating the Glassworks
Upon reaching the glass factory you find the doors locked, windows shut and curtains closed. You also notice that the big chimney at the far end of the building is blowing smoke, which means the furnaces inside are burning. Remi and Mauzuro circle the building looking for an open window or a backdoor, but instead they find a small gap in the curtains that allows them to have a pick into the main furnace chamber of the glassworks. The sight is horrifying - the mutilated bodies of the workers spread on the floors and working tables with goblins running around giggling, abusing the corpses and bickering among themselves.   The party quickly breaks into the building and a messy combat involving nearly 10 goblins, lots of broken and hot molten glass, furnace fire and bucket loads of goblin blood ensues. During the fight you notice a man sitting on a chair at the central alcove of the room. From head to waist he is completely covered in sheets and streams of raw glass that must have killed him in an agonizing and painful death. Through the translucent glass you recognize the face of the Minkai nobleman Lonjiku Kaijitsu .   As the combat continues the goblins identify you as "the longshanks who ruined the big raid" and a few of them manage to retreat down to the basement.   After finishing with the goblins at the furnace room, the party follows the escaping goblins to the basement where they encounter Tsuto Kaijitsu and a few more goblins. After a long bloody combat Tsuto and the goblins are killed.   In a makeshift office Tsuto arranged for himself at the Glassworks basement the party found his dairy. Tsuto's journal, aside from nude drawings of his lover Nualia, had some bits of important information for the safety of Sandpoint.
Excerpts from Tsuto's Journal: The raid went about as planned. Few Thistletop goblins perished, and we were able to secure Tobyn’s casket with ease while the rubes were distracted by the rest. I can’t wait until the real raid. This town deserves a burning, that’s for sure.   Ripnugget seems to favor the overwhelming land approach, but I don’t think it’s the best plan. We should get the quasit’s aid. Send her freaks up from below via the smuggling tunnel in my father’s Glassworks, and then invade from the river and from the Glassworks in smaller but more focusedstrikes. The rest except Bruthazmus agree, and I’m pretty sure the bugbear’s just being contrary to annoy me. My love’s too distracted with the lower chambers to make a decision. Says that once Malfeshnekor’s released and under her command, we won’t need to worry about being subtle. I hope she’s right.   My love seems bent on going through with it—nothing I can say convinces her of her beauty. She remains obsessed with removing what she calls her "celestial taint" and replacing it with her Mother’s grace. Burning her father’s remains at the Thistletop shrine seems to have started the transformation, but I can’t say her new hand is pleasing to me. Hopefully when she offers Sandpoint to Lamashtu’s fires, her new body won’t be as hideous. Maybe I’ll luck out. Succubi are demons too, aren’t they?

The Smuggler's Tunnel

One of the glassworks basement corridors was blocked by brick walls. These walls were recently torn-down and the corridor unblocked. The old corridor led to two rooms that were empty, but from one of them a tunnel cut into the rock continued to the north-east.   Remi and Wesh decide to investigate the tunnel. The tunnel winds lazily for some distance through the bedrock below Sandpoin. Just over 1,800 feet it opens into a 30-foot-diameter cave on the side of the cliff overlooking the Varisian Gulf. The cave mouth slopes down to a narrow beach; Wesh and remi easily note the crude collection of goblin beds or remnants of their meals strewn about the cave.   Worried that the tunnel may serve goblins or the "freaks"mentioned in Tsuto's journal to invade the town, you decide to ask the garrison officers to place lookouts to guard both entrances to the tunnels untill better plans are made.

Saving Ameiko

In another one of the glassworks basement rooms you find Ameiko, wounded and unconscious, but alive. Mauzuro, Jal, Ionus and Kikel take her to the cathedral to be treated by Father Zanthus. Even after she wakes up in the cathedral Ameiko remains distraught at her brother’s treachery. Tsuto revealed to Ameiko that he and several other mercenaries were led by Nualia and hinted that the Aasimar got big plans for Sandpoint’s future. Tsuto warned Ameiko that she didn’t want to be in town when those plans came through, and offered her a chance to join his group at Thistletop. Ameiko recoiled at the suggestion and slapped her brother in shock that he’d sunk to such a low. He responded by unleashing his goblins on her. They overwhelmed her and locked her in the basement.   Ameiko takes the news of her father's death stoically. She is grateful for the party for saving her and hopes to see them soon again in the Rusty Dragon.

Meeting with the Mayor

While Ameiko is healing at the cathedral the party meets with Mayor Kendra Deverin to update her on Tsuto's and Nualia's betrayal, death of Lunjiko, the tunnels under the glassworks and on whats going on in Thistletop .   The mayor is not surprised to learn of the glassworks tunnel - rumors that the glassworks workers were once involved in smuggling operations is not new, and in fact there are stories of secret tunnels crisscrossing under the entire town, though no one ever proved any of them. She orders the garrison officers to place lookouts at botheentrances to the tunnel and build a barricade at the glassworks as you instruct.   She is not happy when the party offers to go to Thistletop to investigate, but she recognizes the necessity of such a journey. The mayor offers to pay up to 300gp from the town's coffers for what ever equipment the party might need to make an excursion or an attack on Thistletop.

Another Nightmare

That night Kikelback has another nightmare. It starts at the smuggler's tunnel under the glassworks. In his dream the gnome sees Nualia as a teenager making passionate love with a young man he does not recognize (it was not Tsuto!). Behind the two lovebirds, a sort of crack or fissure in the rock glows in a green evil glow, and a sickening mist comes out from there to engulf the two teens in the cave.   A woman in white gown runs in the night through the woods. Kikelback does not recognize her. She holds a small package wrapped in white sheets. He can hear a baby crying. The woman buries the baby undera tree in the forest.   The girl in white night gown appears in his room again. She sits on the floor and seems to be eating the food he had left for her before he went to sleep. She turns to face him. Her hair is soaking wet; her face white and her skin wet and wrinkled, like that of someone who stayed in water for a long time. She points her hand to the east (towards the pond and the Turandarock river). "The monster boy, he is a wake."
