Session 22: Welcome to Stygia Report
General Summary
Marching through the frozen wasteland of Stygia, they slowly push through blowing snow, buffeting winds, and the ever-expanding night above, briefly lit by flashes of azure lighting. After a half-day march, they make out shouting voices and moaning carrying upon the wind and begin seeing portals to foreign worlds open in the dark sky above. One portal opens before them and shows the ocean-side cliff of Overwatch. As they approach, Cpt Spile warns them it is an illusion and only leads to more of the Stygian landscape.
Shortly afterward they become the hunted. A pack of hell cats assaults the group, only their red glowing orbits, and shimmering silhouettes give them away. In a few moments, half the pack is dead and the others flee with their lives. Spile notices a cave entrance descending into the glacier below. They follow his position and find a guardpost of minotaurs attending an opening cavern withdrawing downwards into the glacier. They make easy work of the guards, leaving one living as it fled into a side passage. With his luck changing, Sir WD falls 30 ft off a cliff edge during the battle, spraining one of his ankles and bruising his pride.
They egress the guardpost and follow the path deeper into the glacier. Spile finds a secret door to a small chamber but shuts the door within after wakening a 12 ft brass guardian minotaur. They flee and find a second entrance. A large set of metal doors prevent them from going further until Thrasymachus kicks the doors off their hinges and yells out a challenge after finding a horned devil lying in ambush in magical darkness 50' above on a catwalk. Sir WD recognized a bullhead symbol surrounded by a serpent's tail on the door, the coat of arms of Geryon. This would mark the location as Coldsteel, the citadel of the deposed arch-duke of Stygia.
The horned devil meets the challenge of Thrasymachus and assails the archangel's chest with bolts of white lightning. To its surprise, Thrasymachus survived and charges him. Jhoren blasts the devil in a coil of static energy while Spile tried to trap it in a sphere of water to no effect. In a few moments, the devil is thrown to the ground and skewered with the great sunsword. With a clear look of wrath, Thrasymachus ends the devil swiftly. WD had never seen this just hatred painting the face of his patron saint. He now believes this is why Thrasymachus traveled with them. To challenge the deposed archduke of Stygia.
