History
Cy and Charlie met when Cy's uncle, Arthur, was tutoring Charlie in reading. Unbeknownst to each other, they each have a crush on the other. Charlie has kept this hidden because, at first, she was afraid of how her father would respond. As a result, she often picked on Cy and bullied him, but also protected him from anyone else who would try to mess with him. Cy kept his own feelings hidden because he saw how tough Charlie was and thought that a girl like her would never want to waste her time with someone like him.
When they were 16, just before the smear article on her father came out, Cy became very busy with his studies at Briarbank College and would be going to archeological sites. Charlie had a pair of brass knuckles made for him, "so you can protect your weak-ass self."
Now, seven years later, they have been reunited as members of the Circle of Chaos & Ash. Neither is sure if or how to confront their lingering feelings for the other person.

Both Cy and Charlie are close to Cy's uncle, Arthur Hurley.
History
When Cy was about 10 years old, his parents tragically died in an accident. Arthur's late wife, Betty, was Cy's maternal aunt, so they took him in and raised him as their own.
Over the years, Cy has remained very close to Arthur, who guided him as best he could and helped him academically so Cy could pursue his interest in archeology.
After Betty's passing a year ago, neither Cy nor Arthur could cope well with the loss and instead avoided their respective feelings on the incident. Cy missed the funeral for an archeological expedition in Oldfaire, but Arthur does not blame him for it. The two of them would still regularly meet for tea and to catch up, even before they were brought into Candela Obscura.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Both of them are very academic, with Arthur fostering a deep love of learning in Cy.
History
Pierce and Cy met while they were both in school together, and shared some classes. Approximately seven years ago, they each went their separate ways as Cy focused more and more of his attention on his archeology studes and Pierce went in the direction of journalism. Pierce considers Cy an old friend, but Cy has honestly forgotten that he had even gone to school with Pierce until they met again when they formed the Circle of Chaos & Ash.
