Merakesh makes a deal with the Lady of the Bones, and uses blood magic to be ordained with five wards.

No one but he and the Lady of Bones knew of his deal. Five lives for five wards – a young boy to know the shadows; a new born child to know lady luck; a virgin bride to know dissuade; a blind man to know the darkness; and a healing priest to know the blood.   His arm is burnt with the marks of each ward and was told to cover it with tattoos to avoid others recognising the symbols.
