The Q'erek Clan

"What do you want? Staring at me like you've never seen a Kobold before... My family maintains the waterways and sewers beneath our fair city. We defend the town from vermin and intruders below, and we collect our due in return for this service" - Eekek, Master of the Undercity.

Culture

Clan Q'erek, like most Kobold communities, is a deeply social society. The members are in constant communication and cooperation, working always for the betterment and safety of the clan as a whole. While kobolds in some places can become troublesome, stealing from other peoples in order to feed themselves, Clan Q'erek instead earns coin and respect in Endwater and the surrounding lands as rat catchers, sewer technicians and doing other work that people above ground are loath to do.

History

Originally a small tribe living in the hills, the Kobolds of Clan Q'erek joined into a tenuous agreement with the human and dwarven miners that set up in the Hills along the lake.
While Kobolds were seldom welcome in towns at this time, the people settling here appreciated the little dragonoids for their expertise in tunneling and mining, and earned the respect of their neighbors with time.
Eventually, the Kobolds were offered a formal place in the booming town, now known as Endwater, and were even allowed to join the city council.

Demography and Population

Clan Q'erek is made up entirely of Kobolds.

Territories

The clan is housed in the tunnels and sewers beneath Endwater. In addition to the city proper, Clan Q'erek has burrowed into the surrounding counrtyside, and was many small mines, dens and hatcheries hidden away.

Military

While not a particularly large or aggressive Kobold clan, they do maintain a military force for defense.
Most Kobolds learn from an early age to use a sling for ranged attacks, as well as a dagger for self defense. In addition to this, the clan maintains three formal military forces;

  The Herders - This group of kobolds is armed with long poles or full body shields coated in a special powder, of which the exact makeup is a closely guarded secret. These poles and shields are used to direct, herd, and protect from the dangerous Gelatinous Cubes used by the clan to patrol and clean the sewers and tunnels beneath the city. As the powder on the shields or poles seems to irritate or even harm slimes and oozes, they are easy to herd and control with the use of these tools, always moving in the intended direction unless a mistake is made and the creature becomes trapped or cornered, in which case it will likely move back through the following Kobolds and devour them, despite the harm the powder does to the Cube itself.

  Hellbringers - This Elite troupe of Kobolds is armed with great shields, long spears, and bottles of Alchemists Fire or Oil, which is lobbed at foes in the tunnels from behind the safety of a prickly, spear-lined shield wall. Moving always as a solid phalanx, this trained unit of Kobolds excels in tunnel fighting, and has a fearsome reputation for burning monsters (or unfortunate trespassers) alive.

  Gutter Runners - Quick and quiet, the gutter runners are experts in stealthily reaching any part of the city through the sewers or via secret tunnels. Primarily armed with poisoned daggers and darts, these sneaky kobolds are often spoken of in hushed whispers but rarely seen.
