Mount of Souls

The Mount of Souls is the oldest occupied graveyard in the Holy City of Jeharoa. Located outside the city's walls, it contains hundreds of thousands of tombs and graves and is a place of great pilgrimage for the city. It is also where the Stitchers of Milcon reside and where they hold services to the Silent Attendant each Stranger's Day.

Purpose / Function

The Mount of Souls is the largest occupied graveyard in Jeharoa. It is also houses an ancient temple to the god Milcon and is where followers of the Silent Attendant gather to pray and worship.

Sensory & Appearance

On the northeastern side of the city, a hill rises beyond the shadow of the Scaled Quarter’s domes and minarets. About a mile or so across, the hill is dotted with poplars and small stone structures. Walking the hill, you pass hundreds if not thousands of graves. Most are marked only by small headstones. Some are nothing more than a cairn of rocks. Vultures and white-winged corvids call out from sparse boughs of poplars and juniper trees as stray dogs chase each other between the rows of headstones. You see a few large stone sarcophagi flanked by weathered seraphim sculptures and adorned with pomegranate flowers. Near the base of the hill, several acolytes shovel dirt onto a large pit as a half dozen mourners sit nearby and sob quietly. They appear to be civilians, though one Bronze Brother stands vigil nearby.   A stone temple stands at the center of the hill. The temple is small and ancient, perhaps more ancient than any other structure you have seen. The edges of the stone are smooth and marred by pockets. Inside, there is a simple nave and an altar. The interior smells strongly of myrrh and balsam wood incense. A stone pillar stands in the back of the temple, illuminated by small geodesic holes in the ceiling. The pillar is barely carved, yet the top appears to bear a slight resemblance to a dog’s head.

History

The Mount of Souls is one of the oldest graveyards in the world. Thousands of bodies have been interred here, and as a result, the earth is riddled with cavities and catacombs. The area is sacred ground and thus has been blessed so no undead spawn from it. It is tended to by Bassa, a male high elf priest of Milcon. The elf is nearing the end of his own life and was born in the twilight of the Palladian Empire.
