The Fall of the Machinists
Early in his bid for global dominance, Golan Trevize realized he would need to achieve technological dominance over his adversaries. Chief among potential threats were the technomancers of the Machinist Clan.
The incursion against the Machinists began with the deployment of probes and scouts and a series of minor raids. The young Machinist initiate Jimmy Nails encountered the first of these raiding parties while investigating a damaged weather monitoring station on the North Sea coast. During this encounter Jimmy met the enigmatic celestial known as Jean-Claude Delong, who helped the Machinists repel the Phoenix Order's early raids until he simply could delay his own mission no longer.
The Phoenix Order was unrelenting. Trevize used Phoenix scout parties to probe the defenses of Castle Luckymore for weeks until finally dispatching his right hand man, Stroh Gendall, to lead a squad of mechs to destroy the castle, slaughter the Machinists, and steal their techlore for the Golden Empire.
Serge of Moray, the Grandmaster of the Machinists, always knew that the greatest defense of their Clan had always been their secrecy. No one, not even Golan Trevize, could know that the true purpose of the Machinists had been to safeguard an ancient Visitor relic known as the Prismatic Radiant.
Before dying Grandmaster Moray bequeathed the Radiant Cube to Jimmy Nails. He instructed Jimmy to flee the castle and take the cube to Mount Tycho. According to Moray, inside the mountain there was a computing machine programmed with instruction protocols that would keep the Cube safe.
With heavy heart and swearing vengeance against Gendall, Trevize, and the entire Phoenix Order, Jimmy fled his home, the only home he had ever known, and began the journey south to Brightmoon.
