The Wandering Goblin

The Wandering Goblin is a large inn for the size of the town, mainly due to its popularity as a good stopping place on the Great Weston Road. It has a large taproom and a private parlour, along with a large common room for sleeping and several private bedrooms of varying size. There is a substantial sized courtyard around the side and back which offers appropriate stabling services, for a small price.   It is owned by Throri Graybelt, a dwarven ex-adventurer who settled in Makewent about sixty years ago, taking over the business then. Most of the human locals cannot remember a time when she didn't own and run the inn. She is well respected by most of the locals, although there is a bit of gossip that she's too friendly with the tieflings and even lets them in for a drink when the place isn't too busy. She also dabbles a bit in trading, and is quite happy to take unusual and borderline illegal items off people's hand, for a reasonable price.

Staff

Aside from Throri Greybelt herself, there are a number of employees; three servers/cleaners, one cook, a stable hand and a brewer.   Ces Kadrosk (Duland female, early twenties, server/cleaner) - born and raised in Makewent and daughter of a local farmer, Ces would love to be an adventurer, travelling the world and uncovering ancient mysteries. However, she is deathly afraid of anywhere outside of Makewent, so lives through the stories she hears in the inn, dreaming of being far away, doing dangerous things. Throri tolerates her lackadaisical approach to work because she's rather pretty and has a naïve persona that draws people in; whatever she doesn't make up for in actual work, she more than makes up for encouraging others to drink. Despite being considered the most eligible single woman in Makewent, she remains resolutely unmarried, probably waiting for some handsome ex-adventurer to settle in the village looking for someone to listen to his stories.   Xiao Taim (Han female, mid-twenties, server/cleaner) - although she never talks about her past, Xiao is widely rumoured to be from Jin Guo on the far side of the world. What she is doing in Makewent is the source of much idle speculation and whilst she has no doubt heard most the stories, she still refuses to speak about it. Capable at both serving food and drinks, and fending off the most handsy patrons looking to score with an exotic looking woman, Xiao is also quite accomplished at turfing out those whose drunken behaviour get too much even for Throri. She lives in the inn and some of the more scandalous gossip has Xiao and Throri as more than just friends, although neither of them have ever shown anything of the sort.   Bran Crestsinger (Duland male, early thirties, server/cleaner) - Bran claims to be a trained bard, educated in Kaptur and spent most of his twenties on the Great Weston Road as an travelling minstrel. His musical abilities do not support this story; whilst he's reasonably good for a small village, he is considered no where near good enough to have trained in Kaptur. Instead, most see him as one of the finest liars in Newia, and although most locals would discourage asking him for a tune, his stories are well worth a listen. Given his rugged good looks and easy bard charisma, one might expect him to be quite the ladies man, but he married the inn's cook not long after arriving in Makewent, and his eye never strays.   Lidda Crestsinger (halfling female, early thirties, cook) - having a halfling cook is one of the Wandering Goblin's most sellable attractions and Lidda does not fail in that regard. Her food is considered exceptional, as is her ability to churn out vast quantities with seeming ease. Accusations of magic are often bandied about, but only ever in jest, as no one wants to run the risk of never tasting Lidda's culinary output ever again. Traders and travellers aware of her skills are known to push their horses to breaking point to arrive in Makewent earlier than planned, just to stay an extra day. Happily married to Bran, one of the servers and the inn's bard, and the only person who gets to eat her food without paying for it, or paying her, first.   Suffering Mistgem (tiefling male, late forties, stablehand) - rarely seen outside of the stables, Suffering is a tiefling who tends to shy away from most social contact, instead finding solace with animals. When most newcomers realise that their valuable horses and carriages are being left in the care of a tiefling, most are skeptical that such an infernally tainted person can be any good, but Throri almost always convinces them that things will be just fine. Things always are, as Suffering has a quiet, caring nature that puts animals at ease, and the regular travellers know that a night at the Wandering Goblin will result in a well cared for animal in the morning. This doesn't prevent some of the locals being typically discriminatory, and is why Suffering often elects to sleep in the stables, instead of taking that walk through the village to the tiefling ghetto.   Virkalm Axehair (Schwarz male, late forties, brewer) - it is said in Makewent that Virkalm can drink as much ale as he brews, and if he stopped drinking his own products, he would have half the work. There are only three places were Virkalm is found; the basement brewery, the taproom, and his home, where his long-suffering wife raised their six children almost on her own. Proud of his products, even if they're never going to be famous, Virkham enjoys watching other people drink too, and almost every night is found encouraging liberal purchases of his drinks, singing and gambling with unsuspecting visitors who mistake his excessive drinking with drunkenness. Thankfully, his house is close and his wife tolerant (that Throri pays her directly helps), and the locals appreciate having someone who knows his craft.
