Session 20: Which God Are We Trying to Kill?

General Summary

This session begins on the last hour of Caldra 12, 2597 within Gewalt Consilo within The Violent Tips within the World Spine. Atticus with a quick reaction sent a devastating fireball into the Raven Tribe minotaurs which rushed towards them. Following this an intense battle ensued. Tork was enlarged by Kale and endowed with strength to become Voltron Tork who destroyed the enemy with his maul. Alena Birch used a combination of arrows and spells to both fight the enemy and heal as well. Wren took on a minotaur in combat and using her druidic powers, and after getting her feet back under her, dealt devastation. Kale used a combination of druidic forms like his starry form and also his channel divinity to fry and melt a minotaur. Rodan Spice quickly removed himself from the center of the battle to the shadows and several arrows found purchase, including one in the head on a purple minotaur. Atticus used a combination of his magic and wit to charge the front of the battle. Sustaining the most damage, Atticus briefly went down before he was revived by Alena Birch. When the dust, fire, smoke, and gore settled, a voice called out to Tork from below, the voice of the leader of the Raven Tribe, the stealer of his horn... Krot.

    Back to the Action

Krot stood along with Mousen next to Zirk and held the tip of a blade against Zirk's unconscious neck. He told Tork that he knew he would coming looking for the horn around Krot's neck. He warned Tork that they succeeded on the field today, but that the Raven Tribe would come back and keep on fighting every day. And all the party needed was to fail once. Atticus began to interject at this point, stating they could kill them everyday without issue. After a witty back and forth, Krot said they had to make a choice. Watch Zirk die or free the Raven Tribe (specifically Krot) from the curse which prevents them for the real release of death and fight them once more as mortals.
Atticus had other plans and attempted to shoot Mousen through the wrought iron grate upon which they were standing, but to no avail as the magic stopped at the gate and would not pass through it. Atticus explained he didn't think Mousen was part of the deal and subsequently thought he would just kill her. Krot became a bit confused an Atticus insulted his intelligence before Tork pleaded for Krot to tell them about the curse.
      Krot explained that...
"Thousands of years ago I was the first minotaur expelled from my tribe after I killed my brother. In my wandering I came across the god Antormis who was similarly wandering while wearing the clothes of us mortals. When encountered, I flew into a rage and attempted to kill the God of the Dead. I came close to killing the mortal form, but I was no match for a deity. Antormis was angered at my lack of restraint, even though the attack was paltry to Antormis' full power, he cursed me and all minotaurs like me. Those of us who have broken familial ties violently find violent ends. But Antormis determined we should be damned to reawaken the next day, retaining the experience of that visceral pain and violent death. We are led to others like us by a raven. Together we find no peace or rest in sleep nor recreation, just a dark maw that is all consuming. Rage is our only spot in which we can live. Antormis has barred us from entering his realm and bringing our rage there. That is our curse, and it must be removed."

With this information, and Atticus demanded collateral for them to hold as part of the deal, Tork's horn. With a convincing argument, Krot tossed the horn through the grate to the party. Krot then was threatened by Atticus to never receive death should things go awry. With this threat, Atticus left for his piss and everyone else eventually followed him from the chamber to ascend back out of Gewalt Consilo.
The party then tried their luck again with the door to the tombs and did succeed with brute force to break the stone seal. They decided upon seeing the sarcophagi to go back outside into the exterior to cave to sleep for the evening. They did so and the next morning, they awoke well rested a bit before midday on Caldra 13, 2597. With the dawn they returned back down to the tombs. Immediately inside was a room of sarcophagi featuring reliefs of dwarves above each. There are 10 per row and the rows slowly curve down what appears to be a massive spiral ramp (about 100 rows per one revolution). The walls are dotted with burnt out torches, occasional collapsed pieces of ceiling have destroyed tombs underneath them, etc. There is thick dust on the ground that shows no signs of being disturbed for centuries, possibly millennia. The only exceptions came when they uncovered a hole in the sidewall through which some of the purple minotaurs had laid in wait for the party for the ambush the previous night. As they neared the bottom of the space, they encounter tombs without the faces of the dwarves carved into them and eventually a large stone wall from which new tombs had not be carved. Stone seals were on a few doors in this area, but they were not investigated. Rodan Spice did pry open a tomb and found dwarf sludge but nothing interesting. Wren conducted a thorough investigation, but unfortunately, it did not yield anything of great worth.
Back outside, and with a night of good sleep and some time to wake up under their belts, Atticus was able to recall some information from the book he wrote on curses.
Divine Curses diverge from curses imposed by mortal beings. Curses imposed by mortal beings utilize magic that is accessible to other mortal beings. As such, the weave of such curses is familiar, and one who is skilled enough can undo them. Curses imposed by divine beings however... mortals cannot unbind the droplets of water in the sea to reform a firmament of mist. In a same way, the weave of a Divine Curse is a mystery to mortal beings. A mortal being cannot undo it... p. 294

The party reflected on possible implications of such, and decided ultimately to head back to the gates through which they passed as they traveled up the World Spine toward the Pass of Akzott. They were able to make it to the gates around dusk and went over the information they had previously learned (see Session 19: Who Is The Bigger Asshole Session Report for the gates phrases). They determined it must center around "Until Blood Is New" but were stumped on where to go with such knowledge.
Atticus spoke up that there was a possible solution. They could head to his alma mater, the Lorehold College located in the Northern Needles of the The Poisar Alliance, a mere 2-3 week journey. Balking at the distance, the rest of the party wholesale rejected it and instead Tork decided to contact Del via their communication tablet. The conversation was as follows:
Tork: (see Session 19: Who Is The Bigger Asshole Session Report for the gates phrases)

Del: I think we can help one another

Tork: I Will Do Anything... Within Reason... I'm Taken (Tork)
Del: *sigh* I'll Pick You Up

Tork then noticed additional messages on his tablet, such as a picture of Zirk hung from a rope and the words "NOT YOUR BOYFRIEND". At this point Del showed up and the party did a bad job with introductions to the members. Atticus was unsettled while Alena Birch was unhappy at his return. Kale was warry, but nonetheless, Del took them back to Real Del.
The party found themselves in a large library. Wooden shelves stretch around and a massive pink fire crackled in a 10' hearth as overstuffed chairs are sprinkled about. What is peculiar however, is that the library is empty. It does not appear to contain a single volume. It is barren. Del gestures for them to sit and offers refreshments from one of his automated golem servants. Atticus partakes but no one else does. Upon introductions taking place, Del summons Atticus' life work of writing seemingly out of thin air from the bookshelf and Atticus signed it. Del then described what he was proposing to the party.
He knew they were both in need of knowledge and proposed a deal. Knowledge should be available to all, not locked away and forbidden. If the party would enter a library sealed for centuries and retrieve the books he wanted, they would be allowed to take whatever they needed for their endeavors. He would do it himself but the enchantments that are of an old old magic that is strange and impenetrable to Del for now. Upon completing the task, they would be taken by Del wherever they wished in the world. Wishing to discuss in private, Del removed them to an isolated room for discussion. Upon completing their conversation, he brought them back and Tork made the deal. Upon shaking, a temporary magical tattoo of the books Del was seeking were imprinted upon Tork's arm. With that Del offered them rest for the night. They took up the offer and were shown to a hallway of 10 doors after passing through the workshop. They were directed to door 7 where they found seven canopy beds, a large table, kitchenette, two bathrooms, and a window showing a field of wheat beyond. A few minutes later when Cameel and "Bull" the Oxen were brought down, the party discovered a new door had appeared to a barn with two stalls, brand new, for their animals. Alena Birch set alarm spells on the place and with some nightly routines, the party took their sleep. The next sleep will begin in Real Del while the date on the material plan in the World Spine would be right after dusk on Caldra 13, 2597.
