Session 6: French is the New German, and Pesh is the New Pilf
General Summary
The session begins the morning of Twaliy, Solis 8, 2597 with Alena Birch, Kale, and Rodan Spice waking up to the sound of a closing wooden door with their hands securely bound behind their backs as they lean up against a wall. They're in a wooden room that looks like that of a ship, but they feel no motion from the boat. Seated on a small wooden stool next to a wooden door under which a daylight is creeping in is the Talon smoking a pipe.
The Talon launches into part rant, part conversation with Rodan Spice about the party choosing to completely abandon "leave no trace" in favor of just outright looting Mervin Delse's home. Eventually he tells the party that he is sending them out of town, not just because he doesn't want to deal with them at the moment (at least not until they can temper their greed with a longer range vision of their greed), but because they need to stay safe from Mervin Delse. He also presents them with a Bill of Services - Cooper Claw, Doresak Desert - Twaliy, Solis 8, 2597 and deducts the 5,000gp from their 7,000gp as well as returning Mervin Delse's large book to him with a note of apology (the rest of the loot from the raid stays with the party). The Talon pays the promised 1,000gp to the party for their work, keeping up the Claw's end of the deal, and tells them their friend Tork will join them later. With this in mind, they are given the option to set sail on a ship to Foun, Ume, Del, or Pesh. The party, in the interest of still pursuing the treasure of the Doresak Desert, decides to rule out Foun, and in the interest of avoiding the military, avoids Del. With these in mind, they choose the closer Pesh as their destination.
The Talon returns with two associates who hood the party and take them onto the deck of the ship. Alena Birch's hood comes off and she can only see sky around them, no water or anything else in any direction before her hood is replaced. The smell of stale bread and bitterness draws closer to them with bootsteps before they are magically transported to a cabin in another ship. While still dazed, a human with scraggly facial hair, a long overcoat and scuffed boots takes off their restraints, nods, and disappears. The party eventually pick the lock on their room and make their way onto the deck of The Surf Ace. Here they meet the first mate, Atin who allows Rodan Spice to briefly take the helm. Half an hour later they meet the Captain, Helnor Bass 'fal who gives them the basic rules of traveling aboard the ship and lets them know their fare has already been paid as well as their food and drink for the trip.
The food prepared by the cook, Dean is surprisingly good (so good, Rodan Spice and Kale think it might contain ground up human!) The rest of the first day is spent getting to know the crew, gambling with Janiporz, and meeting the monster seeker Selia Madora who is also traveling on this voyage. Kale does some divination of the stars at night, prophesizing that the Scythe constellation he is drawn towards means that someone who connects people together will die that night.
The next morning at breakfast, the group overhears that there was murder a in Gorsac the morning they left. Evidently one of the ships in town had a man nailed to the mast with a teardrop within a circle carved into his chest and a message painted on the deck "Stand not in the way of progress".
Later the same day the ship would come across a derelict ship, listing heavily to one side. Once coming alongside it, they joined the boarding party and examined it. Within the main cabin on the deck they found an alter to what appeared to be an evil deity with a symbol carved in the floor in front of it. A battered strongbox under the bed was unable to be picked or even cleaved apart. The party then descended into the cargo hold of the ship. Here Kale used a discount spell from Durga's Discount Spells, "Detect Life" and lit up all the microbial life around them for 1 minute. Alena Birch used "Detect Good and Evil" and noticed an evil presence from the alter, but also from a room in the ship. Kale went in when the party encountered a shadow demon. A brief but furious fight ensued that ended with Alena Birch using guiding bolt to kill the creature. With it dead, the party searched the rest of the ship. Kale brought the extra ballista bolts back to the The Surf Ace while Rodan Spice found some money he split among the party and also took the lockbox back to the boat. Alena Birch harvested the claws form the deceased creature while Rodan Spice took a red sash it has draped over it for himself.
Once everything salvageable was back aboard the The Surf Ace, the ships parted ways and the The Surf Ace used its catapult to sink the derelict (after some repairs from a malfunction caused by Janiporz). With this, the crew was back under way.
The next day the ship encountered some terrible storms and the party was called upon to help pull her through. With some masterful helmsman work from Rodan Spice, extraordinary acts of strength form Kale, and acrobatics and dexterity from Alena Birch, the ship sailed through without losing time on the journey.
Eventually Rodan Spice managed to open the locked box he had taken with them from the derelict, finding inside a dark unknown metal medallion emblazoned with two streams of fire wrapping around one another in a double helix. Additionally he found a journal written in an unknown language (Alena Birch managed to identify it eventually as Abyssal).
The fourth day was uneventful with the exception of a Janiporz gambling with Rodan Spice and Rodan Spice continuing his drinking spree.
On the final day of the voyage, the crew made the ship ready to anchor off the coast of Pesh and the party was taken to shore by Lisa in a canoe. Once on shore, she commented she likely would never see them again and headed back to the ship.
The party wandered around bleak and small Pesh for the evening before retiring to the Plain White Inn around 4PM. They agreed to freshen up in their rooms (with Selia Madora occupying the third room at the inn before catching another boat the following day to the Northern Reaches of the Fisk Empire) to head out to the blacksmith for Alena Birch and see if they could find anything to do in this town.
