Session 7: Canary in a Lead Mine

General Summary

The session began in the hall of the Plain White Inn where Alena Birch, Kale, and Rodan Spice emerged from their rooms. They decided to go to the blacksmith shop in Pesh but almost immediately turned around to find Del standing alongside Tork at the end of the hallway. Del then slapped Tork and in a single motion teleported away while Tork shouted at him.
Tork and his companions then reunited. He introduced them to his pet, was given his cut of the earnings by Alena Birch, and they all headed for Salonda's Smithy.
At Salonda's Smithy they met Salonda who was in the process of smithing a slightly curved blade. Amidst him going between the anvil and the furnace, he offered the party some various armors he had available while also regailing them with his certainty that smithing was not just crafting, but art. Alena Birch purchased a breastplate for 450gp which he emblazoned the top left corner of with her holy symbol, that of Artemis. Tork ordered a maul which Salonda was to put his own artistic flair on for 18gp as long as it was bludgeoning on one side and piercing on the other (it would be ready the following mid-morning). Kale requested if he could get scale mail not made from armor but from a creature and was informed he could if he brought the creature back to the smithy. Rodan Spice requested if Salonda knew Dalente Frogst, which he replied he did of course, the owner of both the Frogst Mine and the Crest of Pesh Shipping Company.
The party then headed to the Frogst Mine where they encountered a group of mostly dwarves and a couple of elves loading and stacking boxes with the ingots from that days work. The foreman of the crew, an elf named Waga. He initially assumed the party was there to help with the missing miners, but upon realizing they were unaware of the situation, filled them in on the troubles the mine had been having. Evidently over the past two weeks, miners had been going missing. First a dwarf disappeared down one of the shafts. Four days later a human disappeared in the same shaft. A week following this, two miners went together to investigate and never came back. With 15% of their workforce missing, Dalente Frogst was offering a bounty of 600gp for the stopping of the problem and if possible the retrieval of bodies. The party agreed to undertake the task around 6PM as Waga stated they would have the mine to themselves until 6AM to root out the problem, and gave directions to the shaft the miners went down. He told them to collect their reward if they were successful either from Dalente Frogst's home or the Crest of Pesh directly.
Venturing into the mine, the party passed the smelting room and the storage room, following the directions and mine tracks deeper into the earth. Eventually they came to a crevice that had a broken bridge. While looking over it, Kale was attacked by bursts of fire hurled at him. Tork dropped his torch to see if the crevice was only a short distance down but was dismayed to find it went for several hundred feet. Instead the party made their way across (via jumping and climbing on rock faces) to the other side. While light was in short supply, they attacked a spiked individual who had jagged edges coming out of them at all angles as well as a symbol on its chest (Two curling pieces of flame intertwining with one another) that reminded the group of the symbol they had seen on the derelict ship in Session 6: French is the New German, and Pesh is the New Pilf. The battle was intense and long, but with Rodan Spice and Alena Birch's arrows, Kale and Alena Birch's radiant spells, Tork's rage filled attacks, and Kale's transformation into a vicious SpiderFrog, the creature was severely injured. As it attempted to flee deeper into the mine, Tork scored the killing blow, throwing a javelin through the creature's side and pinning it into the wall.
With the creature dead, the party investigated and found another version of the symbol (Two curling pieces of flame intertwining with one another) scorched into the ground as well as the bodies of the four missing miners. Without sufficient magic to destroy the symbol on the ground, the party instead decided to collapse the tunnel onto it, burrying it in rock. The party then left the mine with Tork leaving the jar and his pet within it on the ground next to the dead creature. The bodies were loaded into a minecart and pushed back up to the entrance to the mine at around 6:30PM on Solis 12, 2597.
