Thaltocayotl

The Thaltocayotl is a more generalized catch-all term for the primary underwater living races. Primarily the Sea-Elves, Water Genasi, Messengers, Tritons, Merfolk, Vedalken, Lizardfolk, and Locath. However, for the purposes of political negotiation and grand politics, especially within the Black Gulf region it refers to the city-state society that thrives beneath the Black Gulf. Primarily populated by the Sea Elves who have intentionally separated themselves from the growth and spread of the Empire after their aid in its creation. The Modern use of the term Tlahtocayotl refers to this city-state society that has existed for an exceedingly long time, well before the war of skulls and before the discovery of Strauga by the land-dwellers. The ancient societies which have evolved into the modern Thaltocayotl are responsible for the construction of the ancient temples that dot the landscape of the surface of the Black Gulf although their purpose is even lost to them. They have maintained a culture of extreme craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Structure

The Thaltocayotl place great value on the strength and sanctity of the Sea. They believe that its will is more important than any mortal who would bend it to their will. As a result, member states of the society interpret this in different ways. The Sea Elves build great cities in the empty areas of the Sea bed to avoid disrupting ecosystems, while some of the other peoples live nomadic lives, some as roaming villages, and others follow the commands of the Leviathans, although the followers are viewed poorly by the other factions, seen as a cult movement.

Culture

The Thaltotli are a confederation of various sea-dwelling races, including Sea Elves, Water Genasi, Tritons, and Merfolk. They live in the land under the Sea and believe in the sanctity and strength of the Sea, which they see as a powerful force that should not be tamed or controlled by mortals. Their society is heavily influenced by Meso-American cultures, with a focus on spirituality, mysticism, and respect for the natural world. They practice magic to ward off the curses of the Sea and seek to attain the good-will of powerful creatures such as the Leviathans and Aboleths. The Tlahtotli have previously interacted with other factions, including the colonial Eltree Empire, but have since maintained isolationist policies to protect their way of life.

Public Agenda

The Thaltotli seek to maintain their way of life and protect their people from the dangers of the cursed Black Gulf. They prioritize the sanctity of the Sea and believe that its will is more important than the desires of any mortal. As such, they maintain isolationist policies to prevent outsiders from disrupting their society or harming the Sea. They are also committed to maintaining unity among the various sea-dwelling races that make up their confederation, although there have been past conflicts between the Tritons and the Sea Elves/Merfolk. The Tlahtotli are heavily influenced by Meso-American culture, with a focus on spirituality, mysticism, and respect for the natural world.

Foreign Relations

The Tlahtocayotl has had past interactions with other factions, most notably the Eltree Empire. The empire manipulated the Tlahtocayotl to fight in a war long ago, which resulted in severe death and damage to the confederation. As a result, the Tlahtocayotl have since maintained isolationist policies with surface-dwelling societies.

Mythology & Lore

Both magic and mysticism play a role in Tlahtocayotl's society. Magic is real and is used to ward off the curses of the Sea, which are immensely powerful. It is also used in everyday life, with spellcasting being semi-rare among individuals but available in villages and easily in cities. Mysticism is used in a semi-religious sense to attain the good-will of the Leviathans, the Aboleths, and the Sea itself.
