Vanessa was a showgirl in Jessamyne who PAULO GARDAN met while gambling there. She read his cards and told him of his fate to become the crime boss of Portsmouth. This in part she engineered herself as being a sorcerer of shadows which has most certainly aided his smuggling operations.
